Refresher Driving Course East London

Refresher driving lessons are £41 an hour and are for people who already hold a licence but have not driven for a while, or never really drove after passing. There is no minimum block and no fixed course.

There is no syllabus on this page because a refresher does not have one. You already hold a licence, so nobody is teaching you to drive. The job is finding the two or three things that have gone rusty and fixing those, which is why the first hour is spent watching you rather than instructing you.

Refresher hours are taught in an automatic. If you hold a full manual licence that changes nothing about what you may drive afterwards, and after a long gap most people find one less thing to think about is welcome.

Your First Refresher Lesson

The first hour is an assessment rather than a lesson. We collect you, find somewhere quiet, and let you drive. Your instructor says very little and takes notes.

By the end of that hour we can usually tell you three things: what you are still good at, what has slipped, and roughly how many hours it will take to put right. Most returning drivers are better than they expect at the mechanical side and worse than they expect at observation and forward planning, because those are the parts that fade fastest without regular practice.

Who Books Refresher Hours

• Drivers who have not driven for a year or more
• People who passed their test but never drove independently afterwards
• Drivers who feel anxious or have lost confidence on the road
• Anyone who has recently moved to the UK from abroad
• Drivers who want to bring their knowledge of the Highway Code up to date
• Anyone returning to driving after illness or injury

What’s Changed Since You Passed

If it has been a few years, some of this will be new to you:

• The Highway Code changed in January 2022 and introduced a hierarchy of road users. Drivers now carry greater responsibility toward pedestrians and cyclists, you should give way to pedestrians waiting to cross at a junction, and the recommended passing distance for a cyclist is at least 1.5 metres at speeds up to 30mph.
• The Dutch reach, opening your door with the hand furthest from it so that you naturally turn and look, is now the recommended method.
• Much of East London is now 20mph, including most of Hackney, Tower Hamlets and the City of London, with camera and average-speed enforcement.
• The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every London borough. If your car does not meet the emissions standard you pay daily.
• The practical test itself changed in 2017. Reversing around a corner is gone, and the independent driving section now runs for around 20 minutes, usually following a sat-nav.

None of this is difficult, but being caught out by it in moving traffic is unsettling. We go through the ones that are relevant to the roads you actually drive.

Payment is by cash or bank transfer. There is no minimum block, no joining fee and no charge for pick-up anywhere in our East London coverage area. Lessons run seven days a week between 7am and 10pm, which makes it easier to book the quieter times of day if busy traffic is part of what puts you off.

If Driving Makes You Anxious

Anxiety about driving is common and it is not the same thing as being a bad driver. It is usually specific: motorways, roundabouts, driving at night, dual carriageways, parking with someone waiting behind you, or one particular junction near home.

So we work on the specific thing. That means starting somewhere you already feel safe, building up in stages you agree in advance, and then driving the road that worries you enough times that it stops being the road that worries you.

Sessions can be as long or as short as you want. There is no rule that a lesson has to be two hours, and for some people a focused 45 minutes is more useful.

This is a different problem from first-lesson nerves. If you have never driven at all, the beginner course is the page that deals with that.

Coming Back After a Long Gap

Ten years or more away from driving usually needs a different shape of course. Expect the first two or three hours to be spent rebuilding basic control on quiet residential streets, then a middle phase working on observation, planning and junction discipline, then time on the roads you actually need: the school run, the commute, the drive to see family.

We would rather build the course around real journeys than abstract exercises, so tell us where you want to be able to drive and we will use those routes.

What Refresher Hours Will Not Fix

If your licence has expired, been revoked or been taken off you by a court, lessons are not the first step. That goes to DVLA, and until it is sorted we cannot legally put you in the car. The same applies to a medical condition you are required to declare: their decision governs, not ours.

If you passed but never really drove independently afterwards, four hours will not be enough. In shape that is closer to a beginner course than a refresher, even though you hold the licence, and you will hear that in the first hour rather than after the eighth.

And if what you want is a marked, full-length rehearsal rather than tuition, book a mock test at £50 instead. It is a different thing: a full run on a route around a real test centre, marked to DVSA standards, with a debrief covering every fault.
