The Isle of Dogs loop was never widened, so Westferry Road and Manchester Road carry today's traffic on yesterday's width. Returning drivers who remember empty dock roads find the parked-up bends and the DLR crossings tighter than the map suggests. Twenty is the limit almost everywhere now.
The Blue Bridge at Preston's Road still lifts for shipping, and the queue it leaves behind catches people out. If your nerve goes when you are boxed in with no way forward, this is the place to practise waiting calmly and moving off cleanly once the barriers rise.
What You Actually Practise in Docklands
Reversing comes back first on Spindrift Avenue and Glengall Grove, wide quiet roads where a poor attempt costs you nothing. After that you drive the loop itself, south down East Ferry Road and east onto Manchester Road along the dock edge. North past the Blue Bridge onto Preston's Road closes it. Anyone working toward a retest at Goodmayes adds dual carriageway time elsewhere, because the island gives you none.
Test standard on the island means holding a line through parked bends without drifting over the middle, and reading the DLR crossings early. From Crossharbour it is a straight run north and out toward the Goodmayes test centre, roughly half an hour when the loop is not backed up.
What Docklands Asks of You
The Isle of Dogs has only a handful of ways off it and no road across the middle, so a missed turn on Westferry Road costs you the whole loop rather than a quick detour round the block.
That should change how you drive it. There is no sense rushing a junction you can simply come back to in four minutes, and rushing is what puts a returning driver into trouble at the East Ferry Road turnings.
Pick-up is usually at Crossharbour DLR. The first stretch is East Ferry Road at little more than walking pace, stopping properly at each crossing rather than easing over it. Then the eastern dock edge with water on one side and parked cars on the other, which is where steering accuracy either holds up or does not. Preston's Road brings you back north, and the hour finishes at Mudchute DLR.
The people booking here nearly all live on the island: a flat near Millwall Outer Dock, a car in an underground bay, and everything reachable by DLR until the day it is not. Because the lane narrows without warning where cars park on the left-hand bends by Millwall Outer Dock, and Westferry Road was never widened. Returning drivers swing wide and meet oncoming traffic. We fix it with slow, accurate steering along Manchester Road and the eastern dock edge, holding one line through the bend rather than correcting halfway round.
