Prestige lessons are taught in a premium automatic by our most experienced instructors, and priced on enquiry rather than by the hour. That is down to availability: the prestige car is not with every instructor, so the quote depends on which car and which instructor are free for the hours you want. Send us four things (your area, your days and times, roughly how many hours, and any test date) and we will come back with what is possible and what it costs.
This is the same course as our standard automatic lessons, in a different car. Same DVSA syllabus, same examiner, same marking. Nobody needs prestige lessons to pass, and it is better you hear that here than work it out afterwards.
What you are paying for is the car. Lessons still run seven days a week between 7am and 10pm, with pick-up from home, work or a station anywhere in our coverage area, and payment is still cash or bank transfer.
What It Costs, and Why It Is Not a Fixed Rate
Every other price on this site is published: £37 an hour for a standard automatic, £350 for ten, £41 for a refresher hour, £50 for a mock test, £1,229 for a 30-hour intensive. Prestige is the one exception, so it is fair to say why.
The prestige car is not sitting with every instructor, so what we can offer depends on which car and which instructor are free for the hours you want. A single published rate would either have to be pitched high enough to cover the least convenient slot, or be withdrawn every time the car was already booked. Quoting each enquiry is the honest version of that.
Two things we can tell you before you ring. It costs more than the standard £37 an hour, so if price is the deciding factor, book the standard automatic and put the difference towards more hours. And using a school car for the practical test carries an extra charge, prestige or not.

What Makes a Prestige Lesson Different
A prestige automatic gives you a quieter cabin, a higher and more adjustable driving position, and a full set of driver-assistance aids: parking sensors, a reversing camera, blind-spot warnings and adaptive cruise control.
For some pupils that is simply a better way to spend forty hours. For others it is practical. If you already own, or are about to own, a car of this size, learning in something similar means there is no awkward fortnight of re-learning where the corners are after you pass.
The trade-off is the footprint. A larger car is harder to place on a terraced street in Bow or Bethnal Green than a hatchback is, and the first couple of hours of gap judgement are slower because of it. Most pupils are comfortable with it by the end of the second lesson.
Who Prestige Lessons Suit
- Anyone about to buy, or already running, a car of that size and type
- Taller drivers who run out of legroom in a standard hatchback over a two-hour lesson
- Pupils who find a bigger, quieter cabin easier to concentrate in
- People coming back to driving after a long break who want the calmest environment available
It is a poor fit if your budget is tight, if you want the cheapest route to a licence, or if the car you will actually drive after passing is a small hatchback. In all three cases the standard automatic lessons are the better buy.
What the Lessons Cover
The DVSA syllabus, exactly as the standard lessons cover it: moving off and stopping, junctions and roundabouts, the parking manoeuvres, independent driving on a sat-nav, dual carriageways and the emergency stop. It is set out in full on the automatic lessons page.
The only thing added is the car itself. The first lesson spends longer on the controls than it would in a hatchback, and a few hours after that go on judging where a longer bonnet and a wider body actually end.
Using Driver Assistance on Test
You are allowed to use parking sensors and a reversing camera on the practical test. What you are not allowed to do is rely on them instead of looking. The examiner is marking your observations, so during a bay park or a parallel park you are expected to keep checking your mirrors, your blind spots and all around the car even when the screen is telling you the same thing.
We teach it that way from the start: eyes first, screen second. The test of whether you have learned it properly is simple. You should be able to park just as well in a car with none of it fitted, and by the end of your course you will be able to.
How a Prestige Course Runs
Not everybody does every hour in the prestige car, and mixing the two is usually the cheaper way to get the same result.
A common pattern is standard automatic hours at £37 while you are getting to grips with steering, speed control and junctions, then the prestige car for test preparation and mock runs. Other pupils do the whole course in it from the first lesson. Either works, and you can change your mind partway.
Whichever you choose, the last few hours before your test are spent on the routes around your own test centre, whether Wanstead, Goodmayes or Chingford, so the roundabouts, box junctions and bus lanes on your route are familiar before the examiner sits next to you. Wanstead passes 44.4% of candidates overall and 42.1% in automatic cars, and route familiarity is a large part of the difference.

Can I take my driving test in the prestige car?
Yes, subject to the car being free on your test date, so tell us as soon as you have a slot booked. Use of a school car for the practical test carries an additional charge. Passing in it gives you an automatic licence, the same as passing in any of our cars.
Is a prestige car harder to learn in?
It has a bigger footprint than a standard hatchback, which takes a couple of hours to get used to when judging gaps and parking. Against that, the visibility, the parking sensors and the reversing camera make manoeuvres easier, and the extra weight makes the car feel more settled at speed. Most pupils are comfortable by the end of their second lesson.
Do I need prestige lessons to pass my test?
No. The syllabus, the examiner and the marking are identical whichever car you learn in, and our standard automatic lessons at £37 an hour will get you there just as well. Prestige lessons are about comfort and familiarity with a particular type of car, not about passing more easily.
Are prestige lessons automatic?
Yes. We teach in automatic cars only, prestige included, so a pass gives you an automatic licence covering automatic vehicles. With electric and hybrid cars now the norm on London roads, that covers almost everything you will realistically drive.
