The A2 Blackheath Hill is a long, steady climb on a wide carriageway, and a heavy automatic goes up it without noticing, holding its lane cleanly in traffic that is working much harder. Greenwich Church Street is the opposite: short, narrow, one-way in places and lined with people who treat the road as pavement. A long car turning out of it into Romney Road wants the far lane clear before the front end commits.
The size works on the A102 and up the hill, where the car is stable and easy to place. It does not work in the town centre, where the streets around the market are short, one-way and already holding a coach or two. On Crooms Hill the width is fine and the gradient is the issue, and the two together decide where your manoeuvre practice can honestly happen.
People who cross the river for work and want the tunnel approach to be routine rather than an event every morning. Also drivers living on the hill who have never parked a large car on a slope, which is a weekly problem here and nowhere else nearby. You cannot drive through Greenwich Park, so every crosstown journey goes round it, either along the river or up over the hill.
