Driving in Docklands — Quick Facts
Why Learn to Drive in Docklands?
Few parts of East London stretch your all-round driving like Docklands. You'll get to know roads like Westferry Road and Marsh Wall and build confidence around Millwall Outer Dock and Crossharbour and Mudchute DLR, guided by instructors who teach here every week. The island's old roads were never widened into dual carriageways, so you learn patient, accurate town driving, so the skills you build here are the ones that pass tests.
Our Driving Lessons & Courses in Docklands
Choose the service that fits you — every option below is available right across Docklands:
Your Local Test Centre
Most Docklands learners take their practical test at the Goodmayes test centre, 98 Goodmayes Road, Ilford. You can expect the A12 and the A13 plus the King George Avenue Roundabout and the Seven Kings junction — all roads we practise with you every week. Knowing the route in advance takes a lot of the unknown out of test day, and that calm is worth real marks. On the day you'll likely face manoeuvres on residential streets, with dual-carriageway lane discipline on the A12 and A13.
There's no magic number of lessons — it depends on your starting point and how much you practise. We'll give you an honest estimate after your first session in Docklands and update it as you go.
Driving in Docklands
Docklands is an island of dock-edge roads, tight residential turns and DLR level crossings rather than fast through-routes, which throws up exactly the situations examiners want to see you handle. In practice, you'll tackle the single-carriageway loop of Westferry Road and Manchester Road that rings the Isle of Dogs, with constant DLR crossings and dock bridges.
Your lessons range from Preston's Road to the quieter streets nearby, taking in South Quay and the Isle of Dogs waterfront. The island's old roads were never widened into dual carriageways, so you learn patient, accurate town driving.
Your Route from Docklands to Goodmayes
We don't just drive Docklands's streets; we connect them to the Goodmayes routes. You'll work out from East Ferry Road towards the centre, so test day is simply more of what you've practised.
The examiner's favourites: routes head out along Goodmayes Road and Green Lane into Seven Kings, taking in Barley Lane and South Park Drive, with manoeuvres on the parked-up residential streets nearby.
We finish by tying it back to Docklands: the same skills you've built on East Ferry Road and Marsh Wall, applied on the examiner's roads until the whole route feels like home ground.
Lessons That Fit Docklands Life
Docklands is well connected by the DLR across the Isle of Dogs, but there's no substitute for being able to drive yourself. We pick up right across E14 — from Crossharbour DLR, Mudchute DLR and South Quay DLR and the residential streets around them — at a time that fits work, college or family. We cover the streets between Docklands and Canary Wharf and Poplar, so your lessons can begin wherever your day does.

"Passed first time at Goodmayes with only 1 minor — huge thanks to Kay! Clear, patient instruction the whole way through."
"I've just passed my driving test and honestly couldn't have done it without Ali — the most patient, calm and encouraging instructor I've met. He explained everything clearly and genuinely cared about helping me become a safe driver, not just pass. Highly recommend."
