Silvertown Way lifts you out of Canning Town towards the docks and sorts traffic into lanes before you can see where any of them go. It suits a confident driver and punishes a hesitant one, because there is nowhere to sit and think about it. Down on North Woolwich Road the opposite applies, with dock bridges, tight kerbs and long waits. The two roads need completely different heads.
Pick-up is usually at Custom House. The first part of the hour goes on the dockside roads around Royal Victoria Dock, which are wide, quiet and forgiving, and where reversing and reference points come back fastest.
