E16 has seen the biggest physical change of any area we cover: a new tunnel under the Thames, with charges now applying at both it and Blackwall. The A13 approaches split for it, and drivers returning after a break are reading that signing for the very first time.
Sitting in the wrong lane as the tunnel approach peels away is the local fault. On a 50mph dual carriageway with junctions far apart, a late correction is genuinely dangerous. We practise choosing early and holding it, along with the sustained concentration these long stretches quietly demand.
The Roads You'll Learn On in E16
Britannia Village comes first, since Western Gateway and the roads behind it are wide, quiet and forgiving of a reverse that takes three attempts. The driving then goes east along Victoria Dock Road and south across the dock onto North Woolwich Road. Past the airport it picks up the A1020 Royal Docks Road, where nothing much happens for a mile and concentration is the whole task.
Test standard out here is lane discipline at speed, plus attention that does not wander on a long dual carriageway. Wanstead is the nearer centre at nineteen to twenty-seven minutes, and Goodmayes suits drivers whose journeys begin at the eastern end of the docks.
The Local Version of This in E16
North Woolwich Road is the working edge of the postcode. Wharves and industrial yards feed lorries onto it all day, and they turn across you into gateways with long trailers and blind spots that swallow a small car whole. Add the spray thrown up off these dock roads in winter and your view disappears at the moment you need it most. Sit well back, and never alongside.
Pick-up is at West Silvertown or Royal Victoria DLR. Seagull Lane and the Britannia Village roads take the first slow stretch. Then it drops south onto North Woolwich Road, where wharf lorries swing across you into their gateways, and the A1020 takes you east past the airport fence. Coming back along Victoria Dock Road returns the hour to queue speed, so you finish on the slow work rather than the fast.
Airport and hotel staff on early shifts, agency crews on exhibition build-ups, and residents of the newer dockside blocks who bought a car for trips out of London take most of the bookings. Common Ground with E16 Learners
Work here often means driving something larger than a car: a van for a dock or event job, or a hire vehicle loaded up for an exhibition at ExCeL. Lessons run in an automatic car rather than a van, but the parts people struggle with, lane discipline on the A13, mirror work and reversing without a rear window, are much the same job.
A car lesson may seem irrelevant if the vehicle you need to drive is a van. Much of it is not: observation, positioning and junction timing are identical. What a car cannot teach is the size, so treat lessons as the foundation and get vehicle-specific practice separately.

Two hours normally covers the adjustment.
How many refresher lessons will I need in E16?
