Britannia Village, around Western Gateway and Seagull Lane, has the widest quiet roads anywhere in the postcode, so that is where the reversing and bay parking happen. From there it is a short run to the dockside junctions and, when you are ready, the Silvertown Tunnel approach.
How the Driving Works in E16
Western Gateway and Seagull Lane take the manoeuvres, wide and lightly parked in a way that almost nothing else in the postcode is. The road work is joining the A13 Newham Way at speed, holding your concentration between junctions half a mile apart, and choosing a lane long before the Silvertown Tunnel approach splits away. Wanstead is the usual test centre, north of here, and the A12 stretch on its routes asks for the same lane reading.
Ten minutes of North Woolwich Road without your attention wandering, and the right lane on the A13 chosen before the split is signed: that is the standard. Wanstead is a run north of twenty minutes or more, and we rehearse it properly.
The E16 Specifics
North Woolwich Road still serves working wharves and the industry along Silvertown, so the vehicle ahead of you is often an articulated lorry that needs the full width of the road to get through a gate. They swing out to the right before turning left, and the gap you were about to use disappears while you are looking at it. Hanging back far enough to see the whole trailer is the local habit.
We usually collect at West Silvertown or Royal Victoria DLR. The hour starts on the dockside roads beside the Royal Victoria Dock, wide and quiet enough to settle into, then runs east on North Woolwich Road past the cable car in the lorry traffic. The A1020 Royal Docks Road gives you the sustained speed after that, and we come back through Britannia Village to finish at walking pace.
E16 bookings come from people whose journeys are already long: airport and hotel staff, shift workers in the docks, and residents of the newer blocks who found that everything they need involves a bus and a change. There is also a group learning because a job wants them driving a van. All of them need dual-carriageway confidence more than town-centre polish.
A Second Angle on Automatic Driving Lessons in E16
London City Airport shapes the eastern end of the postcode, with the approach roads busiest at the start and end of the working day and much calmer at weekends. The long dual carriageways are also very different after dark: lighting is patchy in places, distance is hard to judge and the road feels emptier than it is. Both are worth a lesson of their own.

Is the run from E16 to the Wanstead test centre all dual carriageway?
Most of it is, which is exactly why we do not leave it to test day. You take the A13 Newham Way and the fast roads north, then drop into the residential streets around Nightingale Lane at the very end. Those last few minutes are a complete change of pace, and pupils who arrive at Wanstead still keyed up make avoidable mistakes. Two rehearsal runs usually settle it.
Can I practise dropping someone at London City Airport during a lesson?
Yes, and it is a genuinely useful hour. The drop-off is charged and waiting is not tolerated, so you are pulling in, stopping, and moving off again under pressure with signs to read on the way in. It is the same skill as a busy station forecourt, done somewhere the rules are actually enforced. We build up to it after the North Woolwich Road work.
Are automatic lessons more expensive in E16?
