Long stretches of the A13 Newham Way and Royal Docks Road put junctions far apart, so mirror checks become occasional rather than habitual. That is what the mock catches. Wanstead drops you straight into the Nightingale Lane grid, where turnings come every hundred metres or so and each one wants a mirror before anything else.
The manoeuvre is the second finding. Britannia Village estate roads around Western Gateway and Seagull Lane are wide and quiet, while Wanstead sets manoeuvres on Cranbourne Avenue and streets like it, parked on both sides. Reversing accurately with little clearance is a different job, and the debrief usually spends most time on it.
What to Expect Around E16
The bulk of the marked drive goes where junctions sit close together, not where the speed is high. You do the docks side properly, North Woolwich Road and the turns towards the airport. Then a reverse on Western Gateway or Seagull Lane, both wider and quieter than anything examiners use. The A13 section is short on purpose: one lane decision where the Silvertown approach splits away, marked, then back to slow work.
Wanstead is twenty minutes north, up the A406 from Beckton, so the run out is itself lane-discipline practice rather than dead time. Goodmayes is the other centre this postcode feeds, and it adds box junctions to what gets checked. Standard from here means the concentration you hold on Royal Docks Road staying that steady when a junction arrives every forty seconds.
Why E16 Pupils Book This
The lanes out here are wider than the ones you will be marked in. On the A1020 Royal Docks Road and along the dock you can sit almost anywhere across a lane and it still looks about right, so nobody ever learns where their nearside is. Put the same driver on a narrow residential street and the car drifts towards the middle, which reads on the sheet as poor positioning rather than as inexperience.
You are collected in Britannia Village, at the Western Gateway end. The drive runs east along the dock towards the airport approach, then north on the A1020 with the marking on where you sit in the lane rather than on how fast you go. Then it drops into the tighter streets behind mock driving test, Custom House to see whether that position moved. The reverse is on Seagull Lane and the debrief happens by the dock.
A good share of the bookings come from people already driving something for work: airside vehicles at London City Airport, plant on the dockside sites, vans that never leave an estate road. None of that is a licence, and some of it teaches habits a marked sheet then charges for. The rest are Britannia Village residents who bought a flat with a bay attached and would like the car to earn it.
Another Way to Look at It in E16
Evening slots bring headlights into it. On the A13 after dark, judging the speed of traffic you are joining is done from lights rather than from the shape of a car, and dipping and restoring beams on the long unlit stretches towards Beckton is a decision that never comes up in daylight. Winter appointments finish in exactly those conditions.
Fast-road confidence makes a rehearsal look unnecessary from this postcode. The marking rarely lands on the A13. It lands on manoeuvres in streets parked on both sides and on mirror frequency where junctions come close together, and neither is something the Royal Docks roads would ever have flagged.

Ask any of our instructors what E16 pupils get wrong and the answer is the same: sitting in the wrong lane on the approach to Tidal Basin roundabout, where the Silvertown Tunnel traffic separates from the dock roads. Blame fast A13 dual-carriageway driving, the Silvertown Tunnel approaches and ExCeL event traffic along Victoria Dock Road rather than the learner. At Wanstead, the recurring fault is carrying too much speed into the A12 slip and arriving at the merge without a plan, so we drill exactly that. Wanstead passes a little under half of the automatic candidates it tests, and the marks go on lane discipline rather than on the manoeuvres.

I'm already comfortable at fifty on the A13, so what would a mock test find?
Usually frequency rather than capability. Dual-carriageway driving with distant junctions lets observation settle into a rhythm that does not hold up in dense town-centre routes. Add manoeuvring in tight streets and the sat-nav section, and the mock covers the parts of the test that E16's wide dockland roads never really rehearse.
How much of the session is actually marked driving?
About forty minutes, the same as a DVSA test, plus the run out and the debrief, so allow a couple of hours door to door. The drive to Wanstead takes some of that and none of it is wasted, since the A406 lane discipline you need is on the way there. The debrief is the longest single part and the only one you will still be using next week.
My car feels too wide on narrow streets. Is that normal from E16?
It is common here and it is not the car. The dock roads hand you a metre of slack you get nowhere else, so your sense of the nearside has been calibrated wrong. The fix is a reference you can actually see, meaning where the kerb line cuts across the windscreen when the car is properly placed. We set that on Seagull Lane, then test it somewhere unforgiving.
