Wanstead candidates from Hackney tend to be marked on lane discipline at the Redbridge Roundabout; Chingford candidates get marked on gradients and on the tight, car-lined turnings off Larkshall Road. The mock is run towards whichever centre holds your date.
Building It Up in Hackney
Reversing is set on Wilton Way, just off Mare Street, with residents' cars close on both sides. The drive works the right into Graham Road and the run east along Dalston Lane. Then comes the run past the top of the Narrow Way, where a drift into the pedestrianised section ends things on the spot. Chingford adds hills, Wanstead a spiral roundabout.
You are ready when the restriction at the Narrow Way is read off the signs rather than remembered, and when open-road speed looks nothing like your speed on Mare Street. Whichever centre holds your date, the run out from Hackney Central takes about twenty minutes and the debrief follows immediately.
What Changes in Hackney
Several of the streets between London Fields and Mare Street are closed to through traffic at one end, so you drive into them but not out the way you came.
The side effect is that you almost never meet anything coming the other way on your own practice roads. Meeting traffic on a narrow street, deciding who gives way and doing it early, is the one common skill Hackney has quietly never tested you on.
You start at Hackney Downs, where Amhurst Road gives you a warm-up that counts for nothing. Marking starts along Dalston Lane, turns down Graham Road and joins Mare Street heading south past the Town Hall and St Augustine's Tower.
The Narrow Way is passed rather than entered. Lansdowne Drive by London Fields takes the manoeuvre at the end, on a street where somebody will want past you, and the debrief runs back at Hackney Downs.
Hackney bookings tend to come from people who learned on Mare Street, where the bus lanes and the Narrow Way's restrictions make most of the decisions for them, and from households in the terraces around London Fields sharing a single permit bay. Nearly all of them hold a test date well outside the borough and have never once driven towards it.
Another Way to Look at It in Hackney
The mock starts the way the real thing does, which surprises people. You are collected, driven nowhere, and asked to walk to the car and get in as if you had arrived at a test centre. The biggest two are written as tasks, because a list you nod at changes nothing.
