Mare Street is a bus road first and a shopping street second. They pull in every hundred yards up to the Town Hall. At the top, the Narrow Way is a walking and cycling street rather than a road you drive through, and drifting into it has ended plenty of tests.

The Narrow Way is a walking and cycling street with only local access kept, and drifting into it ends a test on the spot. We approach it from Graham Road slowly enough to read the signs properly, which is easier when your right foot is the only thing you are controlling.
On the Road in Hackney
The slow work goes on the quiet terraces off Wilton Way, near London Fields, where a reverse can be done twice without holding anyone up. On the road you practise stopping distances behind buses, reading Graham Road's junctions, and turning left with a rider already alongside your rear door.
The run past Hackney Downs adds a wider, faster feel. Wanstead or Chingford will take your test, and that choice changes the later lessons.
Test standard here means two checks before every left turn on Mare Street, mirror then shoulder, without being told. If you are booked at Chingford the last lessons move onto steeper roads than Hackney has, because holding the car still on a slope is what those routes keep asking for.
Why Hackney Pupils Book This
Coming back to Mare Street from Dalston Lane or Amhurst Road means turning right across a stream of bicycles rather than across cars.
They arrive singly, close together and faster than you expect, and a gap in the traffic is not the same thing as a gap in the riders. The lesson here is to look through the oncoming queue for what is filtering up its inside before you start to turn.
We collect on Lansdowne Drive or one of the terraces by London Fields, and the slow work is done there. From there it is Graham Road east, right onto Amhurst Road, along Dalston Lane and back down to Mare Street, which puts that right turn across the cycle flow in the middle of the hour rather than at the end of it. The last stretch runs up past Hackney Downs.
A lot of pupils here have cycled Mare Street for years and have never sat in a driver's seat. They read traffic well and steer nervously, which is a good problem to have. The rest are parents around London Fields who are tired of the bus with a scooter and a child, and people leaving Hackney for somewhere with no Overground.
Advice Worth Taking in Hackney
- before any left turn on Mare Street, check the nearside mirror, then look over your left shoulder, then start turning. Two checks, in that order, every time. On a road this busy the mirror on its own will miss someone already alongside your rear door

Partly. You already know where the danger sits on Graham Road, and you can usually tell what a driver is about to do before they do it, which takes most pupils weeks. What cycling does not teach is where the car ends or how much room you need to swing into a gap on Mare Street. Observation comes easily, steering takes longer.
Which test centre do automatic pupils from Hackney usually use?
Wanstead and Chingford are the two nearest for E8 pupils. Chingford routes climb Kings Head Hill and narrow at Friday Hill, so hill starts decide them; Wanstead leans on the A12 and the A406 roundabouts. Whichever you book, the Mare Street and Dalston Lane traffic you learn in is heavier than anything the examiner will put you in.
Do lessons from Hackney include the hills on the Chingford routes?
They do if you book your test there. Chingford routes run up Kings Head Hill. That is steeper than anything around Mare Street, and the car has to be held on the footbrake rather than allowed to creep. Friday Hill narrows on you at the same time. We leave the Chingford ground until you are steady locally, then spend two or three sessions on it.
