Elderfield Road and Powerscroft Road take the manoeuvres, with room to reverse slowly and properly. The road work is positioning. Past Clapton Pond that means staying wide of the parked cars and looking well ahead.
On the A104 it means checking the cycle track before every left turn, then getting the approach to Lea Bridge right, because the lanes narrow onto the bridge. Both your test centres sit the far side of the river.
Close to test standard, the descent to Lea Bridge should run on a planned speed rather than a corrected one, and every left turn off the A104 should come with two looks at the cycle track. Wanstead is fifteen to twenty-three minutes east, Chingford a longer run north across the Lea, and we work the roads around whichever centre you book.
What Changes in Clapton
Turning right out of Lower Clapton Road onto Lea Bridge Road is the one that catches people here. Traffic coming down off the ridge arrives faster than it looks, the gap you need has to cover a cycle track as well as the running lanes, and there is a queue building behind you the whole time you wait. The answer is to have the car positioned and the front wheels straight long before a gap appears.
Pick-up is on Powerscroft Road or Elderfield Road. The first stretch uses Kenninghall Road and the streets dropping towards the Lea, where the slopes are gentle enough to work on holding the car still without an audience behind you. Then Upper Clapton Road northbound for steady main-road driving, back down past the Pond, and the right turn onto the A104 saved for last, once you have properly warmed up.
Bookings here are heavily weekend-driven. People who want to reach Springfield Park and the marshes without the walk, families in the terraces off Glyn Road who have outgrown car clubs, and returners whose provisional lapsed years ago. What they need is the turn at the bottom of the ridge repeated until it stops being an event, which is why a block of hours beats one lesson a fortnight here.

Lea Bridge Road has been rebuilt with segregated cycle tracks and its side-road junctions changed with it, so the give-way arrangements are not what long-standing local drivers remember. Add weekend traffic heading for Springfield Park and the marshes and the eastern end of Clapton gets busy on sunny Saturdays. Weekday mid-mornings are the straightforward time to learn it.

How do I emerge onto Upper Clapton Road at rush hour?
You wait, and you make the waiting look deliberate. Traffic on the ridge runs in packs behind the buses, so a real gap comes every couple of minutes rather than continuously. Creep to where you can genuinely see past the parked cars, keep the wheels straight, and go on a gap you chose rather than one somebody flashed you into.
