Turning onto Ron Leighton Way from High Street South and back out onto the A124 gives you the contrast in one loop: crawling past the Town Hall clock tower one minute, keeping up with Barking Road traffic the next. Same right foot, two very different amounts of pressure.
The Roads You'll Learn On in East Ham
Reversing and bay work go on the streets behind Central Park Road, with Kimberley Avenue wide enough to hold a straight line without blocking anybody.
After that the lesson is about stopping legally on a high street that is nearly all loading bay and bus stop, and about creeping past the Town Hall without letting your eyes settle in one place. The A124 comes next, and the turnings north off it begin the run up to Wanstead.
A mile of High Street North should pass without one hurried stop and without a crossing left blocked behind you: that is what test standard looks like here. Wanstead is the nearer of your two centres, eleven to nineteen minutes north through Manor Park, and we cover that route properly beforehand.
The East Ham Specifics
Central Park and Plashet Park sit either side of the high streets, and the roads along them behave unlike anything else in E6.
There are almost no side turnings on the park side, so drivers relax and let their speed climb, then meet a crossing full of people cutting through to the gates. Reading a long stretch of park railing as a hazard rather than a clear run is what this area teaches you.
We meet you on Wakefield Street or one of the turnings off Central Park Road. The first stretch is the park circuit for steady speed and crossing observation, then junction work onto Central Park Road itself.
The busy half follows: south onto High Street South, then west onto the A124 for a few minutes of main-road pace. We finish back on the residential side rather than trying to pull up on the high street.
East Ham bookings lean towards people with somewhere specific to be. Staff at the high-street shops who finish after the buses thin out, families running children to Plashet Park and back, and people caring for relatives over in Plaistow learners. A fair number are second attempts, having learned in a manual and found the constant crawling past parked cars more tiring than it was worth.

Saturday on High Street North is the busiest shopping stretch in the borough, with people crossing between parked cars and loading going on all along it. Weekday mornings after nine are much steadier. The other consideration is stopping: nearly the whole high street is loading bay, bus stop or double yellow, so lessons start and finish on the residential streets.
A fair point pupils raise is that slow high-street work is not what a test is about. Actually it is: most test faults are recorded for observation and awareness rather than anything dramatic. East Ham's high streets are the best local training ground for precisely the thing examiners mark hardest.

If a single habit costs East Ham learners marks, it's missing people stepping out between the parked cars and the bus stops along High Street North. It grows straight out of the long High Street North and South shopping run and the A124 Barking Road arterial between Canning Town and Barking.
Wanstead adds its own trap: choosing the wrong lane on the approach to Charlie Brown's and having to correct inside the roundabout. Because the centre sits between quiet streets and fast dual carriageway, Wanstead tests how well you switch between the two.

Is it worth learning around Central Park before the high street?
Yes, for the first two or three hours. The roads round Central Park give you long stretches without junctions, which is what you want while steering and speed still take conscious effort. They also have proper crossings, so observation starts on day one rather than later. Once you can hold a steady twenty without drifting towards the parked side, High Street South is two minutes away.
How long does it take to drive from East Ham to the Wanstead test centre?
Eleven to nineteen minutes on a normal weekday, north through Manor Park and across Wanstead Flats, longer at school times. Goodmayes, the second centre we use, is a similar length of run east. We normally run a pre-test lesson that goes to the centre by the same route you would take on the day, so nothing about the journey is new to you.
