The drive up to Wanstead runs north through Forest Gate and across Wanstead Flats, thirteen to twenty-one minutes, and it gets covered in full during the final lessons.
The Plaistow Specifics
The grid behind Greengate Street and Balaam Street throws a crossroads at you every few seconds, and most of them are unmarked with cars parked right up to the corner.
Nobody has priority by right and you cannot see who is coming until you are almost across. Lessons here are largely about approach speed: slow enough to stop at every one of them, without crawling so slowly that the car behind starts pushing you.
Pick-up is normally on Grange Road or another turning off Greengate Street, and the first stretch is slow-speed work there. Then the A112 north through the shopping run, where the parked cars leave one moving lane and buses stop in it. Right into Balaam Street, then Prince Regent Lane south for a proper thirty. The hour comes back west along the A124 Barking Road and finishes near St Andrew's Church.
Large households where one licence has to cover everybody, parents doing school runs that cross the borough, and people who work nights and would rather not walk home from Plaistow station at two in the morning. A good number book the ten-hour block at £350 rather than paying weekly, because it takes the decision out of every Sunday.
