What Changes in West Ham
Railways carve West Ham into pieces. Four lines meet at the station, and between the tracks, the Memorial Recreation Ground and the old works land, Manor Road, Plaistow Road and the A124 are close to the only ways through.
You cannot detour round a blockage, and you meet the same junctions again and again in an hour. That repetition is the local advantage: the Manor Road lights come round four or five times a lesson.
We collect on one of the turnings off Memorial Avenue, beside the Memorial Recreation Ground, and the reversing work is done there while the road is still empty. Then Plaistow Road south to the A124 Barking Road, east through a few sets of lights, and back up Manor Road to the box junction, which is the point of the whole hour. The last few minutes run down towards Star Lane.

Where near West Ham can I practise faster dual-carriageway driving?
Not on Manor Road or the A124, which are thirty with lights every few hundred metres. For anything quicker we drop south into automatic driving lessons, Canning Town and use the Newham Way dual carriageway, where the slip roads are properly spaced and the traffic is doing fifty. It is ten minutes from Memorial Avenue, so it fits inside a normal hour without eating it.
