The set piece is the lights at Barking Road and Manor Road, where hanging back too far loses you the green with a box junction still ahead. Wanstead's multi-lane junctions ask the same thing of your positioning.
Test standard here is largely about timing at signals: arriving at the Barking Road crossroads ready to move rather than settled and stopped. Wanstead is fourteen to twenty-two minutes north, with Goodmayes as the second option, so the drive over counts as main-road practice too.
West Ham: What Actually Happens
Manor Road works as a drop-off road for the station, and that changes what you are watching for. Cars stop in the live lane with the hazards on, a door opens on the traffic side, and somebody turns round to get back towards Plaistow Road.
Movement is not the clue here; brake lights, indicators and a driver's head turning are. Learners in E15 spend real time on reading a stopped car rather than on getting past it.
You will usually be met near Star Lane, a couple of turns off the bus route. The first part of the hour is control work and reversing where nothing is coming, then Memorial Avenue past the Memorial Recreation Ground for junctions at a sensible pace.
Plaistow Road follows once you are holding a steady speed. The Barking Road lights come last and only once, so the hour ends on something you can already do.
West Ham station reaches almost everywhere on four lines, so few people here are learning for the commute. They book because work has moved to a yard or a site off the A13 that no timetable serves, because relatives in Plaistow and Beginner Driving Course in Stratford need collecting on days nobody else is free, or because a delivery job was offered on condition of a licence and a clean one.
