The Wanstead routes will feel almost rural afterwards, which is the quiet advantage of learning in EC2.
Test standard here is spotting a restriction before you are committed to it, which is a Bank junction habit that transfers everywhere. Wanstead is twenty-six to thirty-four minutes out, so lessons that work on test routes are booked as longer sessions rather than squeezed into an hour.
Beginner Driving Course on City of London Roads
Upper and Lower Thames Street is the part of the Square Mile nobody expects. It is the A3211, it runs several lanes wide below the buildings with underpasses along it, and traffic moves on it in a way nothing on Cheapside does. So a lesson here is not all crawling behind buses. Within a few streets of Bank you get lane discipline at speed, and two minutes later you are reading timed plates again.
The car meets you on Whitecross Street, since there is nowhere sensible to stand inside the boundary. The first twenty minutes are junction work around Bath Street, then south to London Wall past the Barbican and west along it, then down onto the A3211 for a run in each direction. Back up towards St Paul's, along Cheapside and Poultry, and the hour ends north of the boundary where it started.
Hardly anybody lives inside the Square Mile, so the beginners here are working in it: Barbican residents, hospitality and building staff, and office workers booking an hour before nine or after seven. The reason is nearly always somewhere else. A job that comes with a van, a move out of London, or parents in a town where the last bus goes at six.

Stopping anywhere inside the Square Mile during the working day is close to impossible, and that shapes how lessons run. Meeting points sit just north, around Whitecross Street and Bath Street, and the hour is planned as a continuous drive rather than something with pauses in it. Manoeuvre practice happens outside the City altogether.
It is fair to doubt whether the City is a sensible place to learn from zero, and honestly it is not the easiest. What it offers is sign reading and lane discipline under pressure. Basic control is better built on the quieter streets north of London Wall first.

The A3211 is the quickest road in the City and the only one that behaves like a dual carriageway, so a run in each direction is worth having before you go anywhere near a test route. It comes after London Wall, and well after the control work on the streets north of the boundary.
