What Progress Looks Like in City of London
Quiet kerb space barely exists inside the Square Mile, so the manoeuvres get done a few streets north around Whitecross Street. What you practise instead is restraint: creeping along London Wall behind buses, giving cyclists the room they will take anyway on Bishopsgate, and slowing to read a plate before a junction rather than at it. Wanstead routes are nothing like this, so they get separate lessons.
Test standard here is mostly observation: plates read in time, cycle lanes respected, no drifting into a restricted junction because the car in front went through. Wanstead is a good half hour out and its roads are faster and far more open, so most of your final preparation happens there rather than on Cheapside.
How This Runs in City of London
Upper and Lower Thames Street looks like the one road in the Square Mile where you can make progress: several lanes, the river on one side, underpasses ahead. It is a twenty limit, and the cameras are there precisely because everybody assumes otherwise. The other trap is the exits, which arrive on the left with little warning, and missing one commits you to a long loop back through the one-way streets.
Pick-up is on Whitecross Street or one of the streets by the Barbican, since stopping anywhere central is not realistic. The hour tends to open on London Wall, which flows better than most City roads, then drops down to Thames Street for the lane and speed work. Cheapside and Poultry follow for the slow observation, and we finish back north where you can legally be dropped off.
The Barbican Estate is the one place in the Square Mile where people live and keep a car, and its residents are a large share of the bookings: a space underground, a car in it, and nobody confident enough to take it out. Those lessons start and finish on the car park ramps, which is more slow steering than most pupils get. The rest work here and learn for elsewhere.
Before You Book in City of London
Nowhere else nearby changes as much between Monday and Sunday. On a weekday the Square Mile is buses, cycles, taxis and pedestrians on every crossing; on a Sunday morning it is close to empty. Both are worth driving. The empty version lets you learn where the one-way streets actually go, and the busy version shows exactly why that matters.
The honest question about lessons in the City is whether they are worth the money when so little ground gets covered. Often they are not. One or two sessions for sign reading and low-speed observation are useful, and the bulk of your hours are better spent east of Aldgate.
How to Pass First Time in City of London

Is the City of London a realistic place to have driving lessons?
It is realistic but slow, and it suits a specific purpose. Between the access restrictions at Bank, the one-way system and constant cycle traffic you cover very little ground per hour. As sign-reading and observation practice it is genuinely valuable. As the main setting for learning to drive, somewhere with more variety works better.
Will I be taught by one instructor throughout?

Where would you pick me up if I work near Liverpool Street?
On a side street rather than at the station itself, where stopping is not realistic at any hour. Bishopsgate has no kerb space either, so we usually meet a couple of minutes north on Whitecross Street. East past Aldgate works too. Tell us which building you are in and we will name a corner near Liverpool Street. There is no office to come to: the car comes to you.
Is the twenty limit across the City enforced by camera?
Yes, widely, and Thames Street is where most drivers get caught because it feels like a faster road than it is. It matters for lessons because holding an accurate twenty in an automatic takes deliberate pressure on the accelerator rather than none at all. We spend proper time on it, since speed faults are marked against the limit you are in, not the speed that feels safe.
