Several A-roads converge within a few hundred metres at Aldgate, and by the time the junction opens up in front of you the lane you are in is the road you are taking. Every bit of your attention should be on the signs and mirrors on the approach, and in an automatic none of it is spent on the car.
Whitechapel High Street, where the A11 begins, is short, wide and full of buses and cycles, and the bus gates catch people who follow the vehicle in front. Prescot Street and Leman Street, south of Alie Street, are quieter and are where the slower control work happens.
The Roads You'll Learn On in Aldgate
The quieter blocks around Prescot Street and Leman Street take the manoeuvres, since nothing closer to the junction stands still for long. After that it is lane discipline all the way, choosing your line off the signs coming up Mansell Street rather than at the last set of markings.
Then comes the bus-gated run along Whitechapel High Street and the turn down Commercial Road, which is where most pupils first hold a proper position under pressure.
By test standard you should be picking your lane at Aldgate from the sign rather than from the car in front, and holding it through the junction without a correction. Wanstead is your test centre and a good half hour out, so a full run to the roads near it is built into the course.
How This Runs in Aldgate
The towers on this stretch of the City fringe are permanently half-built, and that shows up as site traffic. Tippers and mixers turn across Mansell Street and Alie Street through the day, often with a banksman holding the traffic while they swing in.
Sitting alongside one as it turns is the mistake people make. Stay well back, in the lane you already chose, and let the whole vehicle finish the turn before you move.
We collect on Prescot Street, where you can usually stand for a minute. The hour opens with emerging practice at the Leman Street and Alie Street junctions, busy enough to be real without being relentless.
Then Mansell Street northbound in the lorry traffic, and a lap around Aldgate Square taken in both directions, which the two-way layout allows. The last ten minutes generally go on Commercial Road before we drop you back.
Aldgate bookings come mostly from people living in the flats above and behind the square who work irregular hours: hotel and hospitality staff, security teams, nurses on shifts.
Very few own a car yet, so the licence is for car clubs and family vehicles, which means lessons stay on real roads rather than quiet ones. Many add hours over in our Whitechapel page, where kerb space to practise on actually exists.
What Costs Marks Around Aldgate

The picture shifts on the Wanstead side of the drive, where the marks go on getting the lane wrong at the large junctions and straying into the Cambridge Park bus lanes. The A12 and A406 do most of the marking at Wanstead, so dual-carriageway confidence matters more here than manoeuvres do.
We rehearse manoeuvres on the quieter blocks south of Alie Street around Prescot Street and Leman Street until they feel routine, then put it all together on full mock runs before your test. None of that effort is wasted; it turns into early, committed lane selection where several A-roads converge in a few hundred metres.
Another Way to Look at It in Aldgate
Weekday Aldgate is office traffic, buses and cycles; Sunday is a different place, with the Petticoat Lane area drawing crowds and streets nearby closed to vehicles. The junction is calmer at weekends but the pedestrian numbers are far higher. Most pupils here book weekday evenings after seven, once the office peak has cleared but the roads are still properly busy.
People near Aldgate often assume that living in the middle of everything makes learning here miserable. It is slow, that much is true. Almost all of the driving happens at low speed though, and low speed is where an automatic is easiest, so progress tends to be quicker than expected.

We usually drive the junction once in each direction, which the two-way layout now allows, then spend the rest of the hour on Commercial Road and the turnings behind it.
Are weekend automatic lessons around Aldgate any easier than weekdays?
Easier for traffic, harder for pedestrians. The office volume disappears on Saturday and Sunday, but Petticoat Lane and Brick Lane pull big crowds and people cross the junction approaches wherever they like. For lane discipline, a weekend morning is good. For general hazard awareness, a weekday is far more representative.
Is it worth learning in an automatic if I mostly drive around Aldgate and the City fringe?
It suits it well. Between the converging junction, the bus lanes and traffic that stops every few seconds, you are rarely doing more than 20mph around Aldgate, and the driving is all observation and lane choice. An automatic takes the pedal work out and leaves you concentrating on what is actually difficult.
How many hours before I drive the Aldgate junction itself?
Usually four or five, and sooner if you are driving weekly rather than fortnightly. The junction is a lane-choice problem, not a car-control one, so what has to be solid first is holding a steady speed and looking well ahead without being reminded. Once that is there, we take the junction from the Mansell Street side first, which gives you the longest approach and the clearest signs.
