Lane choice you already have. The junction forces it every time you come up off Mansell Street, and the A11 begins a few hundred metres later with the lanes long since sorted. What Aldgate Square never gives you is distance. Signs here appear as you arrive; motorway signs arrive a mile before the decision, and acting on the first one is a separate skill.

What This Looks Like in Aldgate

Drop south from the junction and things open up. Mansell Street takes you down to The Highway, the trunk road along the river, and The Highway feeds straight into the Limehouse Link tunnel. That is the first sustained speed of the day, about eight minutes from Aldgate Square.

The Highway is deceptive. It looks like a fast road and behaves like a city one, with side turnings, cycle crossings and speed cameras throughout. Holding a steady legal speed there, neither creeping up nor dropping out of habit, is the discipline the motorway will want from you at 70.

So a fair slice of the session is signs, which Aldgate does not do at distance. Junction numbers, the half-mile board, the three countdown markers, and what a gantry limit means for your lane. Commercial Road offers nothing of the kind, since the next instruction there is a painted arrow twenty yards away. Drivers around Alie Street generally tested from Wanstead.

Ready looks like this: you name the exit off the first sign and change lanes once, early, the way Aldgate taught you. The drive back leaves the fast road and picks up Commercial Road towards Aldgate Square. It is the same run you would make coming home from a test at Wanstead.

Getting Out of Aldgate and Onto Fast Road

Prescot Street to Alie Street, then onto Whitechapel High Street at the exact point the A11 begins, which is barely two minutes from Aldgate Square.

From there it is one road for a long time: the A11 as far as Bow, the A12 turning north out of the interchange, then Eastern Avenue past Redbridge. The A406 covers the last leg and the motorway itself opens at South Woodford. Eleven miles, and rarely under thirty-five minutes on a weekday.

Speed awareness comes first, because Aldgate has quietly ruined yours. On the A11 you are asked to name your speed before you look at the dial, several times, until the guess and the number agree.

Along with that, the cockpit routine: seat, mirrors set for distance, and where the cruise and lights controls actually are. It sounds like housekeeping and it is the difference between a calm first mile and a scramble.

The awkward part here comes before any of the speed does. Alie Street puts you onto Whitechapel High Street a few yards from where the A11 starts, so the lane that carries you east has to be chosen from a side street with no view of it.

Pick wrong and you are sent back around the square to arrive at the same junction again. Sorting that one turn is worth the first attempts of a session on its own.

On an open carriageway nothing is near the car, the sensation of pace drops away, and seventy feels like fifty until you look down. Drivers from a hemmed-in place like Aldgate Square consistently underread their speed the first time the buildings stop.

Pick-up is Prescot Street or the quieter end of Leman Street, since stopping anywhere near the square is a nuisance for everyone. The first stretch works Alie Street and Mansell Street, mostly to check that lane discipline is as good as it usually is around here.

Then it is south and east onto the trunk road for the substance of the hour. You come back along Commercial Road and finish on Prescot Street.

Residents of the blocks off Leman Street who keep a car in a basement bay and use it perhaps twice a month, entirely for trips out of London.
