The A11 starts at Aldgate and runs towards the Wanstead routes 10.2km away, which makes the outbound leg productive rather than dead. Even so, we do not book under four hours here, because half an hour each way out of a two-hour session leaves you almost nothing.

Lane selection off the approach signs is drilled first and revisited daily. Deciding late where the A-roads converge is the local fault and the hardest habit to unpick late in a course. Weekday hours also need care, since the City fringe fills from four onwards and the junction stops moving.

What You Actually Practise in Aldgate

Lane choice made on the approach to the Aldgate junction is drilled daily, and revisited on the last morning. The slower work happens on Prescot Street and Leman Street, where traffic will at least sit still long enough to reverse into a space. Commercial Road takes the longer straight running, with bus gates and timed plates to read at speed rather than at leisure.

Test standard here shows up as commitment: lane chosen off the sign, lane held, no last-second correction at the Aldgate junction. The route towards Wanstead starts along Whitechapel High Street, so the hour before a mock is real teaching rather than transit.

The Local Version of This in Aldgate

Mansell Street is the one to get right. Miss your lane where it drops south towards Tower Hill and the bridge approach and you are not simply marked down, you are over the river with a quarter of an hour of your block gone getting back. On four and five hour sessions that is the difference between two full run-throughs of a route in a morning and one.

Pickup is on Prescot Street. The first forty minutes stay slow on Leman Street and Alie Street, where traffic at least stands still long enough for you to reverse into a gap. Then it is repeated circuits past Aldgate Square, taking a different approach each time.

After the break Commercial Road takes the longer running, and the A11 out of Whitechapel High Street closes the block. That leg doubles as the first half of the run out to Wanstead.

The people booking blocks here work City hours and can only learn by taking leave in one lump. Hotel and restaurant staff around Whitechapel High Street do the same in reverse, using mornings before service. A fair number live in the flats behind Petticoat Lane and have worked out that a fortnight off is cheaper than eighteen months of Saturday lessons.

Local Tips for Passing in Aldgate

• ask for at least four hours of the block on open dual carriageway rather than more time at the Aldgate junction. You rarely need more practice at lane commitment in traffic; you need it for holding a lane when nothing is telling you where to be
• practise your manoeuvres on the quieter blocks south of Alie Street around Prescot Street and Leman Street: quiet enough to get them right, close enough to use often
• Watch the controlled parking zones and bus-lane timings around Whitechapel High Street (start of the A11); they catch people out
• get the sat-nav section practised until following it feels automatic

What People in Aldgate Usually Want to Know

City-fringe drivers routinely assume the hard part is dense traffic, because that is what surrounds them. The junction here is genuinely demanding and people arrive good at it. What catches them is the opposite: sustained forty on Cambridge Park, where signs come faster than they are used to reading and nothing forces a decision for you.

Anyone confident round Aldgate wonders whether an intensive is overkill. Confidence in slow, heavily signed traffic is a narrow skill and it is not what Wanstead marks. The right course length depends on how much time you have spent above thirty miles an hour.
