Shoreditch gives you the hardest part of an intensive for free: constant cyclists and pedestrians on Great Eastern Street and Curtain Road, from the first hour. The 9.4km to Wanstead is saved for the days we need dual carriageway and roundabout work, which this grid simply cannot supply.
Booking matters here more than most areas. Thursday and Friday evenings around the bars are not useful practice, they are just gridlock. Daytime blocks, ideally starting before nine, give you moving traffic. Shoulder checks before moving off get hammered early, because on Curtain Road a cyclist appears every single time.
On the Road in Shoreditch
Reversing and turning practice go into the quieter blocks around Willow Street and Paul Street, where you get thirty seconds without a cyclist arriving. The A10 north to Old Street drills lane discipline and mirror timing in slow two-way traffic. Roundabout and dual carriageway work comes from the Wanstead routes instead, because this grid cannot supply it however long you spend on Curtain Road.
Late in the block the days start before nine, so the drive out to Wanstead stays under half an hour. The marking then happens on moving traffic rather than in a Great Eastern Street queue. Coming back down Curtain Road at the end of it is the real test of whether the observation held.
The Shoreditch Specifics
Nothing on Curtain Road or Great Eastern Street lets you stop and think. Both kerbs are loading bay, permit bay or cycle lane from end to end, so a missed turn has to be sorted while still moving, in traffic, with a rider on your offside.
That is the habit a block builds here: deciding the next thing early because there is no lay-by to work it out in. It is also why the slow work goes to Willow Street and Paul Street instead.
We start from Paul Street rather than the High Street. The first leg is Kingsland Road north with its bus lanes, then east into the streets around Arnold Circus, taken at a speed that lets you read the give-way lines rather than assume them.
Break near St Leonard's Church. Afternoons run the A10 and Great Eastern Street in whichever direction is actually moving. Willow Street is clear enough for reversing once the vans have gone.
Studio and bar staff whose weekdays are empty, which is precisely when this grid is drivable. People whose work has drifted out to sites and studios past the end of the Overground, and who have been turning down the ones they cannot reach. And a steady few leaving Shoreditch altogether, having found the rent and the licence arrived on the same timetable. None of that suits an hour a week.
Before You Book in Shoreditch
Where a session can legally begin matters more here than anywhere. Curtain Road and Great Eastern Street are lined with loading bays, permit bays and cycle lanes, and there is nowhere to sit and wait. Sessions start from an agreed corner at an agreed minute, and turning up eight minutes late genuinely costs you driving time.
A common thought in EC2A: the streets are so congested that an intensive would be hours of sitting still. Partly true, which is why blocks start early and longer sessions run east out of the grid. If a day turns into queuing, we move it.

If the whole grid seizes up we take Kingsland Road out towards Hackney (E8) and spend the hours somewhere they will be spent moving. Nothing is added to the course fee for it.
Does the course price include the DVSA test fee?
No, the DVSA fee is paid to them when you book your Wanstead slot. Instructor hours and the car are what the course price covers. The mileage out to Wanstead and back is included, nine kilometres each way from Curtain Road. Free pick-up from an agreed corner off Paul Street is part of it too.
Do intensive courses in Shoreditch start from home or from a set meeting point?
Usually a set meeting point, agreed when you book. Much of the Shoreditch grid has no legal place to stop, so a corner on a quieter street off Great Eastern Street works better than a flat door. If you live on a street with a loading bay we can often collect there instead, so ask.
