Several A-roads converge in the space of a few hundred metres at Aldgate, so the lane you want has to be chosen early. Drivers who have been away tend to decide late, with a bus on Whitechapel High Street pressing from behind where the A11 begins. Commercial Road is the calmer approach, and a first hour usually starts there before working back to the junction.

How Aldgate Shapes Your Lessons
The Aldgate gyratory was taken out. Traffic that once circulated one way now runs two-way past a new public square, and the layout catches out anyone whose memory of Aldgate predates the rebuild. The 20mph limit and the bus gates on the City side add to the relearning.
The remaining difficulty is convergence. Several A-roads meet within a few hundred metres, and where the A11 begins at Whitechapel High Street your lane needs to be chosen already. Nervous drivers change late, under pressure from buses. We rehearse committing early from Mansell Street and Commercial Road.
Building It Up in Aldgate
Prescot Street and the blocks south of Alie Street give you room to rebuild a reverse and a controlled stop without an audience. After that the work is committing early, from Mansell Street up to the junction and out onto Whitechapel High Street. Coming back down Commercial Road you do the same thing again, until choosing a lane two hundred metres out feels normal rather than brave.
Test standard around here is early lane choice, with the mirror work done before the junction rather than inside it, and a calm exit onto Commercial Road. The Wanstead test centre sits half an hour out through the East End, and that run often becomes the second half of a lesson.
What Changes in Aldgate
Petticoat Lane changes your route rather than your technique. On market days the streets north of Aldgate High Street fill with stalls, vans and people walking in the carriageway, and the short cut that worked last week is simply not available. Everything gets pushed back onto Whitechapel High Street and Commercial Road at their busiest. Knowing which mornings that happens is worth more here than another lap of the junction.
You are collected on Prescot Street. The first stretch runs down Leman Street and out east on Commercial Road, where the lanes are wide and the pace is steady enough to get your bearings back. Then it is in on Mansell Street for two or three passes of the two-way system around Aldgate Square, choosing a lane before the square rather than inside it. Alie Street finishes the hour.
The wholesale businesses off Petticoat Lane still move their own stock, and the people doing it often passed a test long ago and then stopped. Hotel and restaurant staff around the City-fringe towers book too, because their shifts end after the trains thin out. Plenty travel in from refresher driving lessons, Whitechapel, where the same road carries on east under a different name.
What Actually Helps in Aldgate
- look up the charging zone boundary on the Transport for London map before fixing a regular route through Aldgate. Knowing which side of it Mansell Street and Commercial Road sit on can save a repeated daily charge
- practise your manoeuvres on the quieter blocks south of Alie Street around Prescot Street and Leman Street: quiet enough to get them right, close enough to use often
- play to what Aldgate teaches you: early, committed lane selection where several A-roads converge in a few hundred metres
- get a mock test marked to the DVSA standard while there's still time to fix things
- practise at the time of day your test is booked for, not just when it's quiet
The Part Aldgate Pupils Ask About
The Congestion Charge zone's eastern edge runs close to Aldgate, and that catches out returning drivers more than any junction does. A route staying on Commercial Road costs nothing; one that drifts west into the City can leave you with a charge you never noticed. Checking the boundary before setting a regular journey is worth the five minutes.
A refresher can feel like it should only be about handling traffic, when your real problem is not knowing what driving into town now costs. Both belong in the same lesson. Charges, zones and restrictions are as much a part of driving here as lane choice.

Hold your gap on Commercial Road, stay at the limit, and if it still feels close, take the left lane down Mansell Street and let the queue go by.
Do I have to pay the Congestion Charge to drive around Aldgate?
It depends which side of the boundary you are on and at what time, because the zone's eastern edge runs close by. Check the current map and hours on the Transport for London site before setting a regular route, and remember the ULEZ applies separately and every day. A lesson can include driving that boundary.

Can a refresher lesson start at seven, before I open up?
Yes, seven in the morning is the earliest slot and it suits this area particularly well. Commercial Road is already loaded with lorries coming in from the east at that hour while Aldgate High Street is still empty, so you meet the traffic you actually drive in without the midday crush. Come earlier rather than later: by nine the same road is a queue.
