Building It Up in Canada Water
Rope Street and Brunel Road give you room for the manoeuvres, quiet enough that a slow reverse stays slow. On the road it is Lower Road in bus and shopping traffic, where the queues build steadily through the middle of the day. Then Redriff Road and the long curve of Salter Road, where holding a line matters more than speed. Wanstead is where most pupils here test, so the A12 and its roundabouts join once the tunnel and Salter Road stop taking all your attention.
The tunnel bends should be taken without touching either line, and Jamaica Road driven with the bus stops read well ahead. Wanstead means crossing the river and heading north, half an hour or so, which we do in full at least once, because arriving somewhere unfamiliar is the avoidable part.
Canada Water: What Actually Happens
Rotherhithe Street loops right round the peninsula and spends much of that distance as a single working lane between wharf conversions, with cars parked one side and blind bends where the old buildings come out to the kerb. Almost none of it is marked for priority. What it teaches is where to wait: far enough back to see through the bend, not nosed into it hoping the other driver reverses.
We pick up on Rope Street or one of the turnings off Salter Road. The hour usually opens with the peninsula loop, taking Rotherhithe Street slowly for the pinch points, then Salter Road for the long curves and a settled speed. Lower Road and its bus traffic come next, and we finish heading back along Redriff Road rather than leaving you queuing on Jamaica Road at the end of your time.
Canada Water pupils are mostly people in the newer blocks around the dock who have realised the Jubilee line only helps in one direction. They want to drive to relatives in Kent, do a full supermarket run, and cross the river without planning it the night before. Shopping centre staff take the early hours before it opens, and parents book around Southwark Park and the school day.

Only when you are ready for it. The tunnel is tighter and lower than most drivers expect, and its bends catch people out. We build up on the A200 Lower Road and Jamaica Road first. If tunnels worry you, it is worth doing at least once with an instructor beside you.
Where do you take Canada Water pupils for their test?

Not usually. Private car parks are useful for the first few minutes of a first lesson and little else, and the ones here are busy for most of the day. The quiet roads around Rope Street, Brunel Road and Salter Road give better practice, because they are real roads with real junctions and other traffic on them.
Can I avoid the Rotherhithe Tunnel and still learn everything I need?
Yes. Nothing on your test will be a tunnel, and there are other ways across the river from here. What you would miss is the confined-space steering it gives you, so we replace that with the tightest sections of Rotherhithe Street and the curves round the dock on Salter Road. Most people who skip it at hour five ask to try it by hour fifteen anyway.
