For pace you go the other way, out along the A200 Lower Road and south-east onto the A2. That road reaches the M25 at Dartford with no tunnel involved.

Working Up to Test Standard in Canada Water
Two different jobs, then. The tunnel gives you steering accuracy and no margin for error. The A2 gives you distance, and the work there is lane choice as the freight builds towards Dartford. Quiet manoeuvre practice off Salter Road is not what this booking is for. Wanstead is the centre most drivers here use, and reaching it means the tunnel first and the dual carriageway after.
The standard is picking a lane a mile out and holding a gap while the lorries sort themselves. The way back is Redriff Road and Salter Road round the dock, at a quarter of the speed. Wanstead, if that is where you passed, lies back through the tunnel, twenty-five to thirty-three minutes away.
Getting Out of Canada Water and Onto Fast Road
Rope Street onto Salter Road, round to the A200 Lower Road, then west along Rotherhithe New Road to the Old Kent Road, where the A2 begins. South-east from there through New Cross and up over Blackheath to the Sun in the Sands roundabout, then out on the A2 past Kidbrooke and Falconwood, through the Black Prince interchange and out towards Dartford, where the A2 meets the M25. Around half an hour, and none of it involves the tunnel.
Hands come first here, because the peninsula has given you busy ones. On Lower Road you drive with both hands fixed and no shuffling, making one small input and then leaving it alone, which feels wrong after a week of Salter Road bends. Then the same on the Old Kent Road at thirty, holding a straight line while buses and parked cars go past on the nearside, before anything faster is attempted.
The far end of the Old Kent Road is the messy part. Roads combine as you come towards New Cross, buses pull across, and the lane you are in stops being the lane you want without much warning, so everybody changes at once. It is not fast and it is where the route out gets tangled. Being settled and left, and letting the impatient ones go, costs you nothing and keeps the exit simple.
What Changes in Canada Water
The peninsula is a loop and it shows in your hands. Salter Road and Redriff Road curve around the dock, so nothing you drive locally stays straight for more than a few hundred metres and your steering is always doing something small. Put those same busy hands on a long straight carriageway and the car weaves gently for miles. Learning to hold a wheel still, and to look far enough ahead to want to, is the actual work.
You are collected on Rope Street or Brunel Road, off Salter Road. The first few minutes go round the dock and out onto Lower Road, which is enough to see how you hold a line once the bends stop. Then south-east and out, where the middle of the session sits. Coming back you leave the main road for Redriff Road and finish on Rope Street, at roughly a quarter of the speed you have just been doing.
People in the peninsula flats who drive to Kent for family and dread the first half hour. Workers who cross to motorway lessons in Docklands daily and have never driven anything faster than a queue. And drivers who have held a licence for years while living somewhere with a shopping centre, a station and a doctor all within a mile.

Lorries dominate the approach to Dartford, and that is worth meeting with someone beside you. The A2 and the M25 south of the crossing carry heavy freight, the lanes sort themselves into tunnel and bridge traffic under signs, and being boxed in by two lorries at seventy is genuinely uncomfortable the first time it happens.
Fair question from SE16: whether an East London school is the right choice when the useful road runs south. For the A2 and Dartford route it works, since that is the direction we would take anyway. Wanting the M11 specifically makes it a long, expensive session.

Can I just follow a sat nav out of Rotherhithe, or learn the route?
Learn the shape of the A2 run first, then let the sat nav fill in detail. A screen calling an exit at three hundred yards is no help on the A2 if you are already in the wrong lane. The junctions towards Dartford divide for the tunnel and the bridge long before that. Around Salter Road a missed turn costs a lap of the peninsula.
Where does the Old Kent Road actually turn into fast road?
Not for a while. It stays urban through New Cross and over Blackheath, and the character changes properly only after Sun in the Sands, where the junctions turn into slip roads and the limits climb. That is around twenty-five minutes from Rope Street. Everything before it is ordinary main-road driving, which is why the session treats the first half hour as preparation rather than as a drive to somewhere.
Is there anywhere on the peninsula to practise between sessions?
Some of it, yes, though not the part you would expect. Salter Road and Redriff Road will only rehearse curves, which you are already good at. What you can usefully do alone is hold a still wheel and a steady speed along Lower Road and stretch your eyes further ahead than the next junction. Leave the lane sorting near the crossing for a session.
