Waiting at the Barking Road lights for a box junction to clear is patient local driving. A motorway has no lights, only speed and distance, and Manor Road never asked you for either. Post-test sessions from around Memorial Avenue use the A13 slips first, because that is the nearest thing to a genuine merge before the real one.

What This Looks Like in West Ham
Head south from West Ham and things get quick fast. Manor Road drops to the Canning Town interchange, and the A13 Newham Way runs east from there at 50 with full slip roads, five minutes or so from the Memorial Recreation Ground.
The A13 towards Beckton teaches you to leave a fast road properly. Exits arrive quickly, deceleration lanes are short, and braking before you are off the carriageway is what gets marked against you. We run the same three junctions repeatedly until the timing stops needing thought.
What Progress Looks Like in West Ham
The habit worth transferring is arriving ready to move, which the Manor Road crossroads drilled into you. On a slip road nothing waits, so joins and exits get repeated until the timing needs no thought. Stephenson Street is where the slow, precise work happens. Then it is overtaking and holding seventy while lorries pass. Wanstead examined the town work already, and Manor Road is more of the same.
Ready looks like an exit taken early with the braking finished off the carriageway. Plaistow Road heads north past the Memorial Recreation Ground. The A12 then runs up to Redbridge. From there the North Circular turns west and the M11 begins.
Where the Fast Miles Actually Start from West Ham
North rather than towards Canning Town. Up Memorial Avenue and Plaistow Road, on through West Ham to Stratford High Street, then west on the A118 across the Lea to the Bow interchange, where the A12 northbound slip is taken from the roundabout below the flyover.
Hackney Wick, Leyton and the Green Man follow, then Redbridge and the A406. Roughly a quarter of an hour before the speed limit changes for the first time.
Manor Road already taught you to arrive at a junction ready to move, so the first session builds on it rather than starting again. Stephenson Street for the slow control, then the A124 Barking Road lights repeatedly, moving away briskly and settling at a chosen speed instead of a copied one. The A118 run west is driven once in full before any of it happens at fifty.
At Bow the signs for the A12 northbound come up while you are still crossing the river, and the flyover carries traffic over the top of the roundabout you actually need. Take the wrong level and the next opportunity to turn is a mile away. Barking Road junctions give you lights and time to think. This one gives you a sign, a bridge parapet and about ten seconds.
The West Ham Specifics
West Ham station is the signposted walk to the London Stadium, so on event days the pavements between Manor Road and Memorial Avenue carry a crowd on foot for an hour either side, and the parking restrictions push everything else onto the side streets.
Emerging from your own turning becomes the job. Worth planning a session around, because twenty minutes of that is an expensive way to practise nothing you came for.
We collect from Memorial Avenue or Stephenson Street. The first twenty minutes are spent on getting away from junctions promptly and matching the speed of the road rather than the car in front, using the roads around Star Lane.
Then north, with the pace climbing as the road opens, and the long run taken in one piece, broken once so you get out of the car. The return finishes on Plaistow Road, parked, with time to go through the joins properly.
People who work in the Royal Docks and drive there daily without ever touching a motorway, families in the terraces near the Memorial Recreation Ground with relatives out towards Essex, and c2c commuters who have realised the car is quicker for the weekend trips. A fair few book after a job change puts a fifty-mile drive into the week.
Small Things That Make a Difference in West Ham
- look at the tyre pressure plate on the driver's door pillar and find the loaded figure as well as the normal one. Before a holiday run with a full car, use the loaded pressures. It changes how the car sits at seventy
- practise your manoeuvres on the quiet residential turnings off Memorial Avenue and Stephenson Street, well back from the Barking Road traffic: quiet enough to get them right, close enough to use often
- drill the mistake West Ham's roads produce most: hanging back too far at the Barking Road and Manor Road lights, then losing the green with the box junction still ahead of you

Your Local Test Centre
From West Ham, the centre you'll be booked at is Wanstead (on the A113 between Wanstead and Snaresbrook). Its routes typically take in the A12, the A406 North Circular and the A113, so we make sure you're comfortable with Charlie Brown's Roundabout (A406/A113) and the Redbridge Roundabout long before the day.
We'll keep returning to these roads from West Ham until the whole drive feels like routine rather than a test. Expect bay parking, parallel parking and reversing around a corner on the quieter side streets. Goodmayes is the other centre West Ham pupils get booked at, and it's one we know just as well.
Slots at Wanstead are often booked well ahead, so it's worth starting lessons before you have a date rather than after.
Before You Book in West Ham
A car loaded differently behaves differently, and that is a motorway issue rather than a town one. Four passengers and a boot full of luggage means longer stopping distances, more body roll on the sweeping bends past Loughton, and often a higher tyre pressure than the everyday figure. Nobody notices any of it at thirty on Manor Road.
Having passed at Wanstead and worked the Redbridge Roundabout under examination, you might feel the fast-road box is ticked. That taught you lane discipline at a big junction. It did not test an hour of concentration, seventy in a loaded car, or what to do when something goes wrong.

What if I break down on a motorway?
We go through it: live lane, emergency area and hard shoulder are three different situations with three different answers, and it's better to have thought about them in advance.
Does a loaded car handle differently on the motorway?
Noticeably. Extra weight lengthens stopping distances, softens the steering response and can require higher tyre pressures, which are listed on the door pillar. It also affects how quickly you can build speed on a slip road, so joins need planning earlier. We cover it in the session because holiday trips are when most new drivers first meet it.
Is the A13 enough practice, or do I need to go on the M11?
The A13 covers joining, leaving, lane discipline and overtaking at 50. What it cannot give you is sustained 70mph driving or the length of concentration a motorway asks for. For Pass Plus we use the A13 first and then take the A406 north to the M11 within the same session.
Should we head north to the A12 or south to the A13?
North, if the M11 is the destination, because the A12 runs unbroken to Redbridge. South to Canning Town gets you fast road sooner but leaves the North Circular to do afterwards. On a two-hour booking we usually go north and come back down the A13 past Beckton, so both corridors get driven in the same session.
Are motorway lessons available in West Ham?

Can a friend come along in the back during the session?
Usually not on a motorway lesson. A back-seat passenger is a distraction at seventy, which Barking Road at thirty never proves. The session is short enough that every minute counts. Manor Road is fine for company; a slip road is not. If two of you want the training, book separately rather than share. Pick-ups off Memorial Avenue can run back to back.
Can we run a session on a home match day at all?
Yes, if we start early or well after kick-off. The problem is not the driving but the parking and the crowds around the pick-up, so we would meet on Stephenson Street rather than closer to Manor Road, and head north out of the area straight away. Give us the fixture when you book and it will be planned around rather than discovered.
