What You Actually Practise in West Ham
Reversing and bay work go on the turnings off Stephenson Street, well back from the main-road noise, where nothing is waiting on you. After that it is Manor Road south to the lights, then the A124 in both directions, arriving at each signal ready to go rather than settled and stopped.
Plaistow Road and the run past the Memorial Recreation Ground close the loop. Retest work moves out to the Wanstead routes, where the lane you pick at Charlie Brown's Roundabout matters more than any set of lights.
Test standard around here shows at the lights: creeping forward at the right moment, keeping the box clear, moving off without hesitation. Wanstead takes the tests now, fourteen to twenty-two minutes north, so an assessment drive still leaves most of the hour for the junctions themselves.

Railway lines carve this place into pieces. Several of them converge at West Ham station, so there are only a few ways across, and even a five-minute local journey ends up funnelled onto Manor Road or the A124 Barking Road.
You cannot practise here by sticking to quiet streets and hoping. A main road arrives within a minute of setting off, which is why the order of a session matters so much.
You are usually collected outside Plaistow station rather than West Ham, simply because stopping is easier. The first working road is Plaistow Road, then the turnings off Memorial Avenue by the Memorial Recreation Ground for anything slow and technical. After that it is the A124 Barking Road westbound with the lights and the buses. The hour ends around Star Lane, back among the quieter streets.
The bookings come from people who live between two stations and still need a car: a shift starting before the trains run, a job in the Royal Docks with no useful bus, a relative over in Plaistow (E13) to collect. Almost none of that driving is optional, which is why sessions get aimed at one journey and repeated until it stops being an event.

Do not enter unless your exit is clear, with one exception: turning right, you may wait in the box for a gap in oncoming traffic as long as nothing else is blocking you. These junctions are camera enforced, so a habit of edging forward with the queue gets expensive here.
Which test centre will I use for my West Ham driving test?

Is Star Lane worth practising, or should I stay on Manor Road?
Both, and in that order. The streets around Star Lane are quiet enough to settle your steering and observation with nothing behind you, but they will not prepare you for the junctions. Manor Road and the A124 are where the real work sits, and most people need twenty minutes of the first before the second is any use to them at all.
