What We Focus On in Canning Town
At Canning Town you either stay on the roundabout or take the A13 flyover, and the decision has to be made from the gantries before you arrive. Automatics leave you free to look up and commit, which is the difference between a calm approach and a last-second lane change.
The climb onto the flyover is one of the few real gradients in E16, and an automatic will hold its own speed up it without any input from you. Coming back down onto Silvertown Way, the opposite applies, and you need the brake earlier than instinct suggests.
Building It Up in Canning Town
Bidder Street takes the reversing and the parking, because it is wide, lightly parked and nobody is stacking up behind you. From there the work is joining the A124 Barking Road at a proper speed, then holding a lane round the roundabout while three other roads feed into it, then coming back down off the flyover with the brake used early rather than late. The big multi-lane roundabouts on the Wanstead routes ask for exactly that lane discipline.
The roundabout stops being an event once you are close to test standard, and becomes a junction you plan two hundred yards out. The run up to Wanstead takes eighteen to twenty-six minutes, north through Plaistow and Forest Gate, and we drive it as a rehearsal beforehand.
The Local Version of This in Canning Town
The bus station sits right against the roundabout, so the nearside lane on the Barking Road approach is often full of buses swinging into the interchange rather than going anywhere you want to go.
Slipping into it because it looks emptier is the local trap, and you then have to cross back with the roundabout already under your wheels. Pick the lane that keeps you moving while you are still back beside Bow Creek.
Pick-up is usually on Bidder Street, which is wide enough to sit in for a minute. The first part of the hour goes on Manor Road, working north away from the junction on ordinary give-ways and side turnings until your observation is warm. Then it is the A124 Barking Road heading east, two or three circuits of the interchange, and back down Silvertown Way to finish near Star Lane.
The people booking here already commute through the interchange and have had enough of it: Jubilee and DLR passengers whose shifts start before the trains do, parents on the Star Lane side doing nursery runs, and workers heading into the Royal Docks. Almost all of them want a licence for journeys of under five miles that public transport turns into an hour.

The honest hesitation about Canning Town is that its main junction is one of the harder ones locally and nobody wants to learn there. Nor should you at first. Star Lane and Hermit Road do the early work, and the interchange arrives as a planned step rather than a surprise.

Manor Road is genuinely useful, and no, not everything here is dual carriageway. It runs north away from the roundabout with ordinary junctions, parked cars and pedestrians, so it is where steady main-road driving gets built between sessions on Silvertown Way. Add Hermit Road and Bidder Street for the slow work and you have a full lesson without touching the flyover at all.
Can you pick me up from Canning Town station for a lesson?
Yes, though not at the bus station itself, where stopping is restricted and buses need the whole area. We meet on one of the side roads off Silvertown Way or up towards Star Lane, a couple of minutes' walk away. Tell us which exit you are coming out of and we will name a spot.
