Prince Regent Lane gives you ordinary town driving, and the A13 slip roads give you the speed. Wanstead is the test centre, and its own multi-lane roundabouts want that lane picked just as early.
Approaching test standard, event traffic should change your plan rather than your composure, and the lane you need on the A13 should be picked out well before the split appears. Wanstead sits north of here, a little under half an hour on a normal day, and we drive it beforehand.

Prince Regent Lane crosses the A13 Newham Way, and that junction puts two completely different sorts of traffic together. The cars beside you have just come off a trunk road and are still thinking in fifties, while you are pulling out of a thirty.
The gap that looks comfortable is closing much faster than instinct says. Judging closing speed rather than distance is the specific thing this crossing drills into you.
We collect from Boxley Street or Fords Park Road, both a minute from the main roads. The hour opens on Freemasons Road with junction work, then heads north up Prince Regent Lane to the A13 crossing for the closing-speed practice. A stretch of the A13 itself comes after that, and we return through the quieter dock end of Victoria Dock Road so the hour finishes calm rather than fast.
The A13 cuts this area in half, with few crossings between the two sides, so half a mile on the map is a real journey.

What Holds Custom House Learners Back
Custom House is on the Elizabeth line now, so the morning and evening peaks around Victoria Dock Road are heavier than they used to be, quite apart from anything happening at the exhibition centre. The dock roads to the south stay quiet almost all day. That contrast is useful: one lesson can run from a busy signalised junction to an empty dockside in five minutes.
The concern here is that the Royal Docks are too empty to count as real practice. There is something in that for the dockside roads. It is why lessons work outwards to Prince Regent Lane and the A124 Barking Road, where the traffic is constant.
