Where the Fast Miles Actually Start from Custom House
Boxley Street to Fords Park Road, then north up Freemasons Road onto the A13 Newham Way. East along the A13 past Beckton, where the A406 turns off north. Ilford, Redbridge and a last stretch of North Circular bring you to the motorway at South Woodford.

So the first stretch is spent sitting deliberately in the correct lane with nothing around to make you, because on a motorway the lane you are in is a statement about your intentions.
The join off Freemasons Road onto the A13 is tighter than it looks. The nearside lane you are merging into often holds traffic already positioning to leave at the next junction, so the gap you were aiming for closes as somebody slows in front of it.
You are matching the speed of one stream while a second one decelerates inside it. The answer is to look further up the carriageway than the merge itself.
Custom House: What Actually Happens
Coming back down is the difficult half here. You leave the dual carriageway still doing something close to fifty, and within a few hundred metres Freemasons Road is thirty with parked cars and a school.
The docks have trained you to think of the change as a slip road rather than as an actual decision, and speed decay is slow: most drivers are still carrying ten miles an hour too many when the houses start. Exits get practised as often as joins.
Pick-up is on Fords Park Road or Boxley Street. The first stretch runs Victoria Dock Road past the exhibition halls and down Prince Regent Lane, which tells the instructor everything about how you handle wide, empty road. Then out onto the fast carriageway for the middle of the hour. The return is deliberately slow work: off the carriageway, down through the change of limit, and finishing on Boxley Street.
Event crew and contractors who load in and out at the exhibition centre and drive vans back out of London afterwards, often at night. Royal Docks residents commuting south through the tunnel to Kent. And a good number of people who drive the A13 daily, are perfectly comfortable at fifty, and have never once been past it.

Sometimes, if you want tunnel practice, though a charge applies and we agree that beforehand. Most of the session goes on the A13 towards Beckton where the joins and exits are. For real motorway, the M11 is about 25 minutes north via the A406, so say in advance if that is the aim.
Which lane should I be in on the A13 when it is empty?
The left one, and the emptiness is exactly why it needs saying. On a clear dual carriageway there is nothing to push you back over, so drivers stay out and stop noticing. It matters on the A13 for the traffic joining at Beckton, and it matters more on a motorway, where sitting out with the inside lane clear is an offence rather than a habit.
