Three of the yellow boxes on Goodmayes Road are camera-enforced, at Kildowan Road, Kinfauns Road and Castleton Road, and all three sit inside a few hundred yards of the centre door. At the bottom of the same road the carriageway splits round a one-way island at the Green Lane signals. That is a great deal of junction discipline packed into one short B-road, and all of it is readable from the pavement before you book anything.
The meeting point is the Tesco Extra at the top of the road, though we do not linger in a customer car park. The unmarked minutes go on Castleton Road. Marking starts south down Goodmayes Road over the railway bridge, right into Kildowan Road, left down Granton Road to the Green Lane signals, then back up over the Kinfauns Road box to the A118 crossroads at Barley Lane. Kildowan Road takes the manoeuvre and the debrief.
Shift staff from King George Hospital on Barley Lane are an obvious group, because the hours do not fit the trains. So are people in the 20mph streets off Goodmayes Road who park on the street and have never reversed with somebody watching. And anyone on a second attempt here faces the odd job of re-driving a test that began a few streets from their own front door.
The Part Goodmayes Pupils Ask About
The streets your manoeuvre will be set on are the streets you park on. Kinfauns Road, Kildowan Road and Castleton Road are 20mph with cars down both kerbs, and a reverse there is judged on control and observation rather than on finding a gap. It can, though a week to ten days earlier is more useful. That leaves room for two or three lessons on whatever the sheet turns up, and on this road that tends to be the boxes or the width of Goodmayes Road outside number 98. A mock two days before tells you where you stand and leaves no time to change it.

The Tesco car park is fine as a meeting point and nothing more.
