Up Bennetts Castle Lane from the A124 Longbridge Road, right along Becontree Avenue past Valence House and the park to Becontree Heath, then the lights where Wood Lane, Green Lane and Whalebone Lane South all arrive together, and back south-west down Wood Lane with the bus lane on your nearside.
Test standard from here means crossing Becontree Heath in the lane you chose two hundred yards back, then holding the offside lane on Wood Lane rather than drifting into a bus lane. It also means finding the right turning off an avenue that looks like four other avenues.
The Local Version of This in Dagenham
Becontree was laid out as a single scheme of around 26,000 homes between 1921 and 1935, and the consequence is measurable rather than atmospheric. Becontree Avenue, Valence Avenue and Bennetts Castle Lane share a width, a kerb line and a junction spacing. Drive one and you have driven the others, so a marked hour has to take you somewhere the pattern breaks, and Becontree Heath is the nearest place that does.
Pick-up is on Bonham Road behind Valence House, and the first few minutes on Margery Road and Henshawe Road are not marked. No. Directions come verbally and nobody expects you to tell Bonham Road from Margery Road. What the grid does punish is late reading. Becontree Avenue, Valence Avenue and Bennetts Castle Lane all look alike, so the sign is the only thing telling you which turning is yours, and a marked run shows how late you leave it.
Is drifting into the westbound Wood Lane bus lane a serious fault?
It is usually recorded as a driving fault first time, and it escalates. Three of the same fault becomes serious, and on the westbound approach to Becontree Heath along Wood Lane it is rarely a one-off, because the nearside lane is where the road naturally pulls you. The sheet is read for repeats rather than totals for exactly that reason.

Twice, from different arms, with roughly half an hour between them.
