The Limehouse Link makes you good at holding a straight, settled line with no kerb or landmark to steer by. That is a narrow skill. The Goodmayes route has no tunnels at all, and it is dense with junction decisions of the sort a mile of tunnel never asks you to make.
Commercial Road has trained you around bus lanes, but Goodmayes runs timed ones on Green Lane, which is a different judgement. Combine that with the box junctions at Seven Kings and most debriefs from Limehouse cover restriction reading rather than car control, which is usually already sound.
On the Road in Limehouse
The drive concentrates on density rather than speed. Out along Commercial Road and down Branch Road first, with the marking on how early each decision was made rather than whether it happened to work.
Then past Limehouse Basin and back up Butcher Row at a pace nobody would call cautious. Manoeuvres go on Maroon Street or Repton Street. Timed bus lanes get their own section, because Goodmayes fails people on those.
Goodmayes is a fair distance out, so the mock uses the journey as the warm-up and marks from the moment you leave Salmon Lane. Standard there is box junctions kept clear and lanes chosen off signs, which is the opposite of the skill the Link tunnel has quietly been teaching you.
Limehouse: What Actually Happens
Narrow Street earns its name. Past Limehouse Basin it runs between old wharf walls with barely room for two cars, and parts of it are cobbled, so both your clearance judgement and the feel through the wheel differ from Commercial Road a few hundred metres north.
Working out what will fit is a daily job here, which is why a marked drive spends less time proving it than you would expect.
Collection is on Repton Street. The first stretch works the residential emerges onto Salmon Lane, then Butcher Row and Branch Road under the railway, where the bridge cuts down what you can see of the traffic coming. Narrow Street follows at walking pace past the Basin. The Link gets one run eastbound, purely for the merge at the portal onto Commercial Road, and the debrief is back on Maroon Street.
The c2c out of Limehouse puts Essex twenty minutes away, so people here manage without a car until something changes: a site with no station near it, a child, a parent who needs driving to appointments. Residents around the Basin and the newer blocks along Commercial Road make up most of the rest, and they book with a date at Goodmayes already in hand.
