The A13 East India Dock Road starts at your door and runs most of the way towards Goodmayes, so the 11km trip is not dead time. It is the exact arterial driving the test needs. We still book long blocks, but the outbound leg counts as coaching rather than commuting.
The All Saints junction gets its own slot, usually day three or four. The DLR viaduct hides the road markings until you are nearly on them, and choosing a lane from the overhead signs is a habit that takes several passes to build. Manoeuvres go in Bygrove Street between runs.

The last full day is a straight run to Goodmayes, marked from the moment you pull away. Half an hour of A13 and A12 driving gets you there. If lane commitment at Blackwall still wobbles under pressure, the spare hours go there rather than on anything new.
How This Runs in Poplar
Every left turn off East India Dock Road, into Cotton Street or up towards Chrisp Street, starts with a bus lane you have to cross.
Read the plate and you may enter it to turn; guess, and you either dive in far too early or swing across at the last second. On full days you make that turn twenty times, which is the only thing that stops it being a decision.
Collection is on Grundy Street, behind the market. The block opens on Poplar High Street and the turnings by the Poplar Baths, slow work while the A13 is still filling up. Then East India Dock Road east towards Blackwall and back, with those left turns taken deliberately. Break at Chrisp Street. The last hour is Cotton Street and a reverse into a gap on Bygrove Street.
People working the warehouses and depots along the A13 corridor, where a licence decides which jobs you can take at all. Chrisp Street traders book it. So do parents on the Lansbury streets who are tired of two buses to a hospital appointment. Nearly all of them want it inside a month, because the reason they are learning has a date attached to it.
How to Pass First Time in Poplar
- ask for top-up hours to be booked provisionally at the start, not at the end. Goodmayes slots and instructor diaries both fill, and finding five spare hours in the final week is harder than releasing them if you turn out not to need them
- play to what Poplar teaches you: trusting the overhead signs and choosing a lane early, from repeated A13 and Aspen Way splits at Blackwall
- use our car on the day for a small extra charge so nothing about it is unfamiliar
- learn the timings of bus lanes and box junctions on Chrisp Street
- build about 26–34 minutes' drive journey to Goodmayes into your plan for the day
The Honest Version for Poplar
Not everyone is ready when the date arrives, and pretending otherwise helps nobody. Around day seven we say plainly whether the standard is there. From Poplar the common shortfall is not the A13 but lane commitment at All Saints under pressure, and that is usually four or five extra hours rather than a rebuild.
The honest hesitation from E14 is whether thirty hours is enough when the run to Goodmayes eats into every session. Sometimes it is not. If that is how it looks by the middle of the block, we say so early enough for you to add hours.

Do you cover Poplar for intensive driving course?

What happens if I am not ready by my test date on a Poplar intensive course?
You have two options and we will tell you which we would take. Moving the test costs you the wait but not the fee if you give three clear working days' notice. Adding hours and keeping the date works when the gap is narrow, such as lane choice at the Blackwall splits, rather than broad.
Do lessons go through the Blackwall Tunnel from Poplar?
No. The approach is worth driving, because the lane choice starts a long way back under the DLR, but going through and coming round can swallow forty minutes of a paid block when it queues, and the crossing is charged now as well. We use the A13 and the Aspen Way splits instead and leave the tunnel until after you pass.
What does a full day of a Poplar intensive course actually look like?
Four hours of driving with two proper breaks, not four straight hours on the A13. A day opens with manoeuvres off Bygrove Street while you are fresh, takes the middle stretch on East India Dock Road, and finishes somewhere local so you end on a small win. We stop before concentration goes, often near All Saints, because tired hours teach very little and cost the same.
