The junction that catches people is Clayhall Avenue, where right-turning traffic queues in the outside lane of Woodford Avenue. Beginners creep forward, lose sight of the gap they had picked, and then take one that has already closed. We teach that wait from a stationary position with the wheels straight, repeatedly.
Working Up to Test Standard in Clayhall
The working loop goes out of Clayhall Avenue into Mossford Lane, along Fullwell Avenue to the Fullwell Cross roundabout, south down the A123 through Barkingside High Street and Cranbrook Road to Gants Hill roundabout, then north-west along Woodford Avenue back to Clayhall Avenue. Two big roundabouts, a shopping street and a dual carriageway in a circuit that returns you to a quiet road each lap.

Steering, stopping and a turn in the road come first, with the Longwood Gardens end by Clayhall Park as the place to do it. Then Clayhall Avenue down to the lights, and the A1400 Woodford Avenue, left in and left out at first and right across it much later. You finish on the avenues, engine off, with the last ten minutes kept for the debrief.
Clayhall has no station of its own, so every journey begins with a walk to Gants Hill or Barkingside, or a bus. Yes, though simpler now than their history suggests. The Woodford Avenue lanes have, since 18 August 2025, run in the weekday peaks only, 7 to 10 in the morning and 4 to 7 in the afternoon, and they are camera enforced. We teach you to read the plate at the start of the lane every time rather than memorise hours.
Can manoeuvres be practised near the Claybury Broadway shops?
Not in the parade's own parking area, which fills within minutes and leaves no room to reverse. We use Tiverton Avenue and Wensleydale Avenue off Clayhall Avenue instead: wide, level and quiet enough for a bay park to be repeated three times without holding anyone up. Claybury Broadway is for observation work, not manoeuvres.
Does Clayhall have anywhere to practise hill starts on a real slope?
Not really, and better to say so than pretend. The avenues off Clayhall Avenue are close to level and so is Woodford Avenue, which means gradient work has to be planned into the drive out towards the test routes rather than left to chance on Tiverton Avenue. It is one reason a course here does not stay on your own streets.
Is Woodford Avenue too fast a road to learn on?
It is a dual carriageway with bus lanes and traffic that moves quickly, so it is faster than anything else in Clayhall, and it is also the reason people learn well here. Once you can merge onto it, hold a lane and turn right across it, most of what a test asks becomes easier. We build up to it over several hours rather than dropping you on it.
