At the Grove Road junction, learners get caught by moving over too late and finishing up on the wrong side of the bus lane. Nothing in an automatic distracts you from the road markings on the approach, so we use that junction early to build the habit of planning ahead.
What You Actually Practise in Mile End
Slow-speed work goes on the grid off Burdett Road, around Ropery Street, where a reverse can be repeated until it is tidy. Out on the A11 the job is gap control, closing smoothly on the car ahead in traffic that never quite clears.
The junction with Grove Road gets repeated, because moving over late strands you behind the bus lane. Wanstead takes your test, and the A12 arrives once that is solid.
By the end you should be able to sit in Mile End Road traffic for twenty minutes without either tailgating or leaving a gap the length of a bus. The drive out to Wanstead picks up the A12 within minutes, and that whole run gets covered properly before your date.
What Changes in Mile End
Mile End Park and the Regent's Canal run north to south through the middle of E3, and inside Mile End itself only the A11 crosses them. Grove Road takes you up the eastern side, Burdett Road down the western side, and the choice is made for you.
If a lorry stops on Grove Road you sit behind it. Lessons here teach commitment to a route and reading much further ahead than most areas ask for.
We collect on Rhodeswell Road or a turning off Burdett Road. The first part of the hour goes on that grid, then Bow Common Lane for straight, unhurried driving with junctions either side. After that it is Burdett Road north to the A11, east through the traffic past Queen Mary, and up Grove Road past the Palm Tree. The last ten minutes come back down towards Mile End station.
Students and staff from Queen Mary who have three years here and want to leave with a licence, plus people in the blocks off Burdett Road who moved in for the Central line and then took a job outside London. Parents book too, because getting a small child from Mile End Park to anywhere east of the Lea is a long trip otherwise.
