Getting Out of Wanstead and Onto Fast Road
Out of Cranbourne Avenue onto Wanstead High Street, along New Wanstead and onto the A12 Eastern Avenue where it comes up out of the cut-and-cover section beneath George Green.
East to the Redbridge Roundabout, then north-west on the A406 past Charlie Brown's, and the M11 entrance at South Woodford follows. Six or seven minutes on a quiet morning. No other area we cover puts a motorway that close to a twenty-mile-an-hour street.
Because the road is so close, the first session climbs a ladder rather than a step. Twenty on Cranbourne Avenue, thirty along the High Street, then forty and fifty held for a full minute each on Eastern Avenue before anything faster is discussed.
Each stage gets a mirror check and a spoken speed. It sounds slow and it takes about ten minutes, and it means seventy is the fifth thing you have done rather than the second.
The slip up onto Eastern Avenue by George Green is where local drivers give themselves away. It is short, it emerges from the covered section, and the traffic on the main carriageway is already at fifty.
The fault is joining at thirty-five and hoping, which is what a lifetime of the High Street produces. You need most of the slip used up and the speed matched before the merge, not after it.
How This Runs in Wanstead
There is no middle here. Nightingale Lane and Cranbourne Avenue are twenty-mile-an-hour streets with cars parked both sides, and the fast road is two minutes away.
Nowhere on that route asks you to spend ten minutes at forty first, which is how most drivers ease into a journey. Left alone, your first minutes at seventy are also your first minutes of the day, and cold hands and a cold head are a poor combination at that speed.
Collection is on Nightingale Lane, Elmcroft Avenue or Cranbourne Avenue. The first fifteen minutes are spent on purpose rather than by necessity, working Overton Drive and Blake Hall Road until your mirror checks are running without prompting.
Only then do you head out, and because the approach is so short, almost the whole remaining hour is genuine fast-road time. The session ends back on Cranbourne Avenue with the debrief at the kerb.
Families driving to the Suffolk and Norfolk coast who have been splitting the journey oddly to avoid the first hour. Contractors whose work has spread around the M25. And drivers coming back to it after a long gap, often in their sixties, who want the long trip checked before they commit to doing it with grandchildren in the car.
