Getting Out of Tower Hamlets and Onto Fast Road
From Bygrove Street in Poplar it is the A13 East India Dock Road east to Blackwall, then north onto the A12 where it comes up from the tunnel, past Bow and Hackney Wick to Leytonstone, into Eastern Avenue, round the Redbridge Roundabout and out on the A406 to the M11 at South Woodford. From Mile End you would use Burdett Road and the A11 to Bow instead and join the same road there. Twenty-five minutes either way.
Limits are the first subject, which surprises people. On the way out of the borough you are asked to call the limit at every change, from the twenty streets to the A11 and up again on Aspen Way, and to say what told you. Usually it is memory rather than a sign, and that is the whole point, since on the road you are heading for the sign is all you get.
Where the A12 climbs out of the tunnel at Blackwall you are joining traffic that has been sitting at a steady speed underground for half a mile with no reason to slow for you. There is no stacking and no negotiating; the flow arrives complete. Local drivers who are used to the give and take of the A11 wait for a courtesy that is not coming. You match the speed and you take the space.
The Tower Hamlets Specifics
One journey across this borough crosses four different limits. The streets around Beaumont Square and Ropery Street are twenty, the A11 is thirty, Aspen Way and the approach roads run faster again, and none of it is announced the way a fast road announces itself. You learn the limits here by knowing the borough rather than by reading, which is exactly the habit that fails you on a road you have never driven before.
Where you are collected changes the shape more than anything else. From Ropery Street or Bygrove Street the warm-up is short, a few minutes on the twenty streets and then straight out. From the western side it is Commercial Road first, which is worth driving anyway. The fast work sits in the middle wherever you started, and the run back into Bow or Poplar feels absurdly slow within a mile of leaving it.

Then a car has to go to an airport, and seventy arrives alone in the dark. A session on the M11 exists for that day, not for tomorrow. If the trip never happens, put the money into refresher hours instead.
