Westferry Circus then adds a lane you commit to before the exit shows itself. Post-test work starts at that hinge, because the Aspen Way merge asks for both habits at once.

What We Focus On in Canary Wharf
Nothing fast begins here. You take the Aspen Way slip at West India Quay and settle onto dual carriageway before anything else happens, then run east towards Blackwall. The nearest real motorway is a dozen miles north, so most Canary Wharf sessions are booked as a longer block from the start.
At Blackwall the A102 drops into the tunnel beneath lane-control gantries, and a red X over your lane means move now rather than at the portal. That is worth practising, because it is the same instruction a closed lane gives you on a motorway at twice the speed.
What to Expect Around Canary Wharf
Most of the session goes on the Aspen Way slips, using the full length rather than arriving short of speed at the top. Between runs we drop to the side roads by Millwall Inner Dock, where Mastmaker Road rewards small steering inputs and nothing showy. Then it is a held line at seventy. Goodmayes gave you the examined town driving and none of it covered this.
You are close when a merge no longer changes your voice. The run out goes east along Aspen Way from West India Quay. The A12 lifts you north as far as Redbridge. Fifteen minutes on the North Circular later, the M11 opens up.
Getting Out of Canary Wharf and Onto Fast Road
Everyone assumes the Aspen Way and the A12. If your first long trip runs south or west, the other way out matters more: east along Marsh Wall, right onto Preston's Road, round the Blackwall roundabout and down into the northern portal on the A102, out at Kidbrooke onto the A2, and the M25 at Dartford beyond that. Ten minutes of estate road, then dual carriageway the whole way with nothing to stop for.
Before any of that the session stays beside Millwall Inner Dock. Seat, mirrors, then a run on Mastmaker Road to feel what the car does when you ask it for speed rather than restraint, which years of 20mph cameras have trained out of you.
Then one slip onto Aspen Way and straight back off at the next junction, twice over, so the joining sequence is settled before a tunnel is involved.
At Blackwall the left-hand lane commits to the southbound bore and there is no changing your mind once you are past the height gantry. Width and height limits are posted on the approach and have to be read at speed, and the northbound bore is the older and tighter of the two, with a bend inside it that arrives without warning. Nothing around West India Quay asks any of that.
The Canary Wharf Specifics
Under the towers at Canada Square and in the underpasses beneath the estate the phone signal drops, and the sat-nav voice goes with it. Until you surface you are navigating off the overhead boards alone.
That is a nuisance on a Tuesday and a useful rehearsal for a motorway, where the blue signs give the instruction a mile out and the screen is only ever the second opinion. Most Wharf drivers already have the habit and have never noticed it.
Pick-up is usually a turning off Marsh Wall or the Lightermans Road end, where stopping for a minute is possible. The first fifteen minutes stay on the estate with the screen switched off and the signs doing the work.
Then Aspen Way, the run north, and the longest continuous stretch the booking allows, with a proper stop before turning round. We come back the same way and finish beside West India Quay, back at twenty.
Two sorts. People in the towers who have a car for site visits or client trips and have never taken it past the M25, and residents in the flats above the estate who bought something for weekends and now have a wedding in Suffolk to drive to. Both tend to want a Saturday morning, because a weekday session spends its first half hour in traffic.
