Where the Fast Miles Actually Start from Forest Gate
Up Woodgrange Road, along Dames Road and onto Centre Road, straight across Wanstead Flats to the Whipps Cross roundabout. Woodford New Road climbs from there with Epping Forest on both sides, up to Waterworks Corner, where you join the A406 heading east for a short run to South Woodford and the start of the motorway. About ten minutes in all, with almost none of it spent sitting in traffic once the Flats are behind you.
The first hour goes on the transition rather than the speed. Dames Road and Centre Road across the Flats give you a road that opens out with nothing built along it, which is the nearest thing locally to leaving a town behind. We drive it twice, then take Woodford New Road once, so the climb and the limit changes are met before the A406 adds traffic to them.
Woodford New Road is where people misjudge it. You leave a busy roundabout, the road opens into dual carriageway between the trees and the limit rises, but the forest on both sides hides how much speed you have picked up. Traffic behind is already travelling. Read the signs rather than the surroundings, because Capel Road has taught your eyes to judge speed from what is beside you.
What Changes in Forest Gate
Inside a mile of Woodgrange Market the limit changes three times: the shopping stretch, the open road along the edge of the Flats, and the climb out towards the forest.
Nowhere else on our patch asks you to read that many signs in ten minutes. It is the best local training there is for a motorway, where the limit changes at roadworks and gantries and there is nothing in the scenery to tell you it has.
We collect from Sprowston Road or Osborne Road, facing the Flats. The first fifteen minutes are spent reading limits out loud before each change rather than after it, which sounds childish and stops the drift entirely.
Then out across the Flats and up onto fast road, where the session settles into long runs with a stop. The finish is back on Woodgrange Road at twenty, which is the part people get wrong.

Being this close to open road, most book two hours rather than three.

For all the difficulty, Forest Gate leaves you with clean speed changes between a crowded 20mph shopping street and the open road along the edge of the Flats.
What Holds Forest Gate Learners Back
North of Loughton the M11 opens out and gets exposed. Crosswinds across the Essex farmland push a light car noticeably, particularly on the viaducts and when a lorry passes and the shelter suddenly stops. Correcting smoothly, rather than snatching at the wheel, is something you can only learn by feeling it happen.
Being fifteen minutes from the motorway makes it tempting to treat the whole thing as a formality. Proximity is an advantage but it is not experience. What it does mean is that a two-hour session here is nearly all motorway, so the money goes on driving.

Yes, and this is the route. Centre Road across the Flats, Whipps Cross and Woodford New Road reach the A406 near where the motorway starts, avoiding the Green Man entirely. It runs better than the A12 at rush hour and gives you a limit that rises in stages, which suits a first session. We usually come home the other way.
Is the road across Wanstead Flats any use as motorway practice?
As a stepping stone, yes. Centre Road gives you an open run with a higher limit and long sightlines, which is the right place to feel a settled speed before the traffic is added to it. It is not a motorway and nothing about it teaches you joining. We use it in the first twenty minutes and then leave it behind for the real thing.
