Wapping is a pocket with only a handful of ways in off the A1203 Highway, so you end up turning right across it again and again, at Wapping Lane, at Garnet Street, and back down to the river. The car waits on Green Bank or at the Tench Street end, since the High Street lanes rarely allow it. The first hour is walking pace between the warehouses on Wapping High Street and Wapping Wall, then Wapping Lane up to the Highway for the turning work. The break usually falls by Hermitage Memorial Gardens, and the second half runs the Highway east and back through Garnet Street.

Can I learn in Wapping's narrow streets on an automatic intensive course?
Yes, and automatics make the narrow lanes easier, since your attention stays on position and observation rather than anything else. Wapping High Street and Wapping Wall are excellent for low-speed accuracy. The test itself will be at Wanstead, 10.2km north, so the later sessions move onto its dual carriageways and roundabouts.
Can the car reach my door in the Wapping High Street lanes?
Usually, and where it cannot we agree a pickup one street away. Wapping High Street and Wapping Wall are narrow, cobbled in places and often blocked by a delivery van, so waiting outside a converted warehouse is not always possible. The Tench Street end is easier, and local pickup costs nothing either way.
Do the cobbles make manoeuvres harder than they will be on test?
Yes, and for most of the course that is useful. Reversing on the setts around Wapping Wall makes you steer deliberately, because the car will not roll smoothly to help you out. The closing days move onto ordinary tarmac out near Wanstead, so the manoeuvre you finish on matches the surface you will actually be marked on.
I drove for years abroad. What does an intensive course in Wapping cover for me?
