The sequence is short because the distances are. Manoeuvres on Charteris Road and Harts Grove, then the Monkhams loop, Monkhams Avenue into Monkhams Drive and Monkhams Lane, for junctions with something happening at them. Then the A104 past the Churchill statue in both directions, until the parked cars stop dictating your speed. Snakes Lane West and The Broadway follow for congestion at low speed, and Charlie Brown's Roundabout last, approached from the A113 Chigwell Road, before the run north-west out to Chingford.
Twice a day the A104 stops behaving like an A-road. Bancroft's and Woodford County High both front the High Road, and at drop-off and pick-up the parked cars double up and the whole length of the Green moves at walking pace. Residents plan around it without thinking about it. Anyone new to the road tries to get past the queue once, meets something coming out of a side turning, and does not try again.
Practising the Chingford Routes from Woodford Green
Before the test routes come the home ones. The Woodford Green Road System, and When to Use It
Woodford Green is built along one road rather than around a centre. The A104 High Road runs unbroken from the Churchill statue down to Whipps Cross roundabout, and it collects nearly everything: the schools, the shops, the buses and every side street on the Green. West of it is Epping Forest, so there is nothing to cut through, no parallel route and no alternative when the High Road is standing. East of it the ground falls to the Roding valley and the A113 Chigwell Road, which is the second through route and the one that takes you to Charlie Brown's. Between the two sit Snakes Lane West, Broadmead Road and the Monkhams streets, residential in character even where they carry traffic. The awkward direction is south-east. Everything heading that way funnels into Charlie Brown's Roundabout, where the A113 meets the A1400 beneath the A406 flyover with the M11 slip roads joining in, and there is no way round it. North and west are easier, but the forest edge leaves fewer choices than the map suggests.
The school terms run this road. Two schools front the A104 on the Green, so from about half eight and again from three the High Road is a slow line of traffic with doors opening into it, which is worth one lesson deliberately and not five. The commuter tide is a separate thing: Woodford and South Woodford fill from seven, and the short-window parking around the station and Snakes Lane West turns over all morning, which makes that a place for bay work later in a course rather than earlier. Charlie Brown's is heaviest into the evening peak, when the M11 traffic and the A406 arrive together, so a first visit belongs mid-morning or on a Sunday. School holidays change the area more than the time of day does, and the High Road in August is a different road.
The usable slow ground is smaller than all the greenery suggests. Charteris Road and Harts Grove take the manoeuvres and the Monkhams streets take junction repetition, and beyond that most of what looks quiet on the map is either the forest edge with nowhere to stop or the High Road pretending to be residential. The A104 is not practice ground at any hour, and nor is anything within sight of Charlie Brown's. Private practice is more realistic here than in inner East London, because the controlled parking is confined to the streets around Woodford station and Snakes Lane West, which leaves kerb space elsewhere for a household to keep a car on. If a relative will sit with you, the Monkhams roads are where to do it. Sunday mornings on those streets are as quiet as IG8 gets.
The A104 is really two roads sharing one name, and the change comes at the southern tip of the Green. North of it you have the High Road: parked cars, shopfronts, buses and side turnings, none of it quick. South of it the road becomes Woodford New Road, the frontage stops, the forest takes over, and for the best part of a mile nothing sets your speed for you: no parked line to squeeze past, no shop doors, few turnings. An hour spent learning the rhythm of the Green comes undone in about thirty seconds, the speed climbs without anyone asking it to, and the far end is Whipps Cross roundabout, where Lea Bridge Road turns west towards Walthamstow and your lane has to be settled before the trees run out. Northbound is the same trap reversed: the road slows down well before most drivers do, and the first parked car back on the Green is where they find out. Low afternoon sun through the trees hides brake lights, and wet leaves keep that surface greasy after the rest of IG8 has dried.
Where Woodford Green Learners Take the Test
