The Highway is the road that decides how a beginner is taught here. It runs fast and mostly straight, the side roads feeding it give you a short view and a small gap, and there is no drifting out to sort yourself out afterwards.
It also offers very few places to turn round, so a missed turn carries you a long way east before you can come back. Lessons in Shadwell are therefore planned as loops rather than out-and-back runs.
The hour tends to start on the turnings near Wilton's Music Hall, wide enough to swap seats without a queue forming behind you. First job is the one-way plates: three or four turns in a row where you read the sign before committing rather than after.
