Building It Up in Upton Park
Turning in the road and bay parking get done around Plashet Grove, where the kerbs are straight and nobody is queuing behind you. Green Street teaches the other half.
Outside Queens Market a van blocks the road every fifty yards, so you decide early whether there is room to go round. The A124 Barking Road comes later, and by the time you are driving north to the Wanstead routes that decision is quick.
Test standard here shows up on the A124 Barking Road at four in the afternoon, when you cross the junction by the Boleyn Tavern without hesitating. Wanstead sits twelve to twenty minutes north, so late lessons run the approach itself rather than a version of it.
What Upton Park Asks of You
Katherine Road is the road that teaches Upton Park beginners the local habit. It runs north off the A124 past Plashet Grove with cars parked solidly down both sides, so for long stretches only one vehicle fits through.
Somebody has to give way into a gap and it is rarely marked which of you it should be. You learn to pick your gap two or three car lengths early rather than meeting a van nose to nose.
Pick-up is at your door, which around here saves the walk down to Upton Park station. The first twenty minutes go on Plashet Grove, moving off and stopping with nothing coming. Then Katherine Road for the give-and-take, a right onto Plashet Road and a loop back.
